Gold Buying Muhurat 2027: Akshaya Tritiya, Dhanteras and Every Pushya Window

The complete gold buying muhurat calendar for 2027, computed rather than copied. Akshaya Tritiya on Sunday 9 May with both luminaries exalted at sunrise, Dhanteras on Wednesday 27 October, and all 13 Pushya windows including the four Guru Pushya Thursdays, reported to the hour in IST.

Three observances anchor the traditional gold buying year in India: Akshaya Tritiya in the bright half of Vaishakha, Dhanteras at the opening of Diwali and the monthly return of the Moon to Pushya nakshatra. Each rests on a different piece of panchanga arithmetic, which means each can be computed exactly rather than looked up from a drifting festival almanac. This page publishes the 2027 dates from Tempora's ephemeris engine, then explains what each observance is, why tradition ties it to gold and where the computation can disagree with a printed calendar.

One boundary before the table. A muhurat is a statement about when tradition favours the act of purchase. It is not a statement about what gold will cost. Tempora's research on the 2027 gold price lives in separate notes with their own falsifiers, linked in the limitations section below.

The 2027 gold buying calendar

Dates computed from Swiss Ephemeris under the True Pushya Paksha ayanamsha, tithi sampled at sunrise, Pushya windows refined to the hour, reported in IST. Regenerate with tools/gen_muhurat_2027.py rather than editing.

Sixteen entries in all: one Akshaya Tritiya, Dhanteras with the Lakshmi Puja Amavasya two days after and 13 Pushya windows, of which four coincide with a Thursday and so qualify as Guru Pushya. The rest of this page explains the arithmetic behind each row.

Akshaya Tritiya: the double exaltation of 9 May 2027

Akshaya Tritiya is the third tithi of the bright half of Vaishakha. The word akshaya means undiminishing, and the traditional claim is that whatever is begun, given or acquired on this day does not decay. Gold, the metal that does not tarnish, became the day's signature purchase because the symbolism runs in both directions: an imperishable asset bought on the imperishable day.

The astronomical structure underneath the tradition is specific and checkable. Exaltation assigns each planet one sign of maximum dignity: for the Sun that sign is Aries and for the Moon it is Taurus. On the morning of Sunday 9 May 2027 the engine finds the tithi at sunrise to be Shukla Tritiya, the Sun at 25.09 degrees of sidereal Aries and the Moon in Taurus. Both luminaries stand in their exaltation signs at once, which is the double exaltation signature the classical texts cite when they rate Akshaya Tritiya above every other purchase day of the year.

The arithmetic of why this coincidence recurs on this tithi is worth spelling out. The Sun spends roughly one month in Aries each year, in late April and much of May under a sidereal reckoning. A tithi is a 12 degree step of the Moon's elongation from the Sun, so on Shukla Tritiya the Moon sits between 24 and 36 degrees ahead of the Sun. With the Sun deep in Aries, that offset lands the Moon one sign ahead in Taurus. The bright-half third tithi of Vaishakha is therefore almost the only tithi of the year on which the Sun's exaltation and the Moon's exaltation can hold simultaneously, and in 2027 the sunrise sample confirms that they do.

Dhanteras and the Diwali Amavasya

Dhanteras, formally Dhanatrayodashi, is the thirteenth tithi of the dark half of Kartika and the opening day of the Diwali sequence. In 2027 the engine places Krishna Trayodashi at sunrise on Wednesday 27 October, with the Sun in sidereal Libra. The Lakshmi Puja Amavasya, the new Moon night of Diwali itself, follows on Friday 29 October 2027.

The gold link here is devotional rather than astronomical. Dhanteras honours Dhanvantari, who in the Puranic account emerged from the churning of the ocean carrying a pot of amrita, and the day's custom is to bring new metal into the house: gold and silver first, utensils where the budget stops. Jewellers treat it as the heaviest buying day of the Indian year. Unlike Akshaya Tritiya there is no exaltation geometry underneath it; the date is pure tithi arithmetic, which is why it wanders across late October and early November from year to year and why computing it beats remembering it.

The 2027 Diwali cluster also sits close to a Pushya window: the 22 to 23 October pass ends four days before Dhanteras. Buyers who follow the nakshatra tradition often use that pre-Diwali Pushya for the purchase and keep Dhanteras for the ritual first use.

Pushya and Guru Pushya: the 13 windows

Pushya is the eighth nakshatra, the arc from 3 degrees 20 minutes to 16 degrees 40 minutes of sidereal Cancer. Its name derives from the root for nourishment, its presiding deity is Brihaspati, the Jupiter of the pantheon, and the muhurta literature treats it as the single most auspicious nakshatra for acquisition: what is bought under Pushya is held to be nourished and to endure. Gold, again, is the canonical purchase. The one standing exception is marriage, which tradition excludes from Pushya entirely.

The Moon completes a sidereal circuit in about 27.3 days, so it crosses Pushya once per sidereal month and 13 times in 2027. Each pass lasts roughly 21 hours, and the calendar above reports every window refined to the hour in IST, from the first on 22 January to the last on 16 December. Note that a window rarely respects civil midnight: the February pass, for example, opens at 19:30 on the 18th and runs to 17:30 the next day, so the favourable hours straddle two dates.

When a Pushya window overlaps a Thursday, the weekday of Guru, the combination is called Guru Pushya and the tradition rates it the strongest recurring gold day, since Jupiter then rules both the nakshatra's deity and the day itself. In 2027 this happens four times: 18 February from 19:30, 18 March all day, 15 April until 08:30 and 16 December all day. How the dates were computed

Every date on this page comes from one script, tools/gen_muhurat_2027.py, running on Tempora's ephemeris engine. The pipeline has three stages.

1. Positions. Solar and lunar longitudes come from Swiss Ephemeris, converted to sidereal values with the True Pushya Paksha ayanamsha, the frame that anchors the star Pushya at the midpoint of sidereal Cancer. Since this calendar leans on Pushya itself, the ayanamsha choice is not cosmetic: a different frame shifts the nakshatra boundary and moves every window edge.
2. Tithi at sunrise. A tithi is a 12 degree step of the Moon's elongation from the Sun. Festival convention assigns each civil day the tithi prevailing at sunrise, so the engine samples the elongation at approximately IST sunrise and reads Akshaya Tritiya and Dhanteras from that sample. This is where printed almanacs most often disagree with each other, because a tithi that ends mid-morning can be attached to either of two days depending on the compiler's convention.
3. Nakshatra windows. The Moon's sidereal longitude is tested against the Pushya arc and each entry and exit is refined to the hour, then reported in IST. Weekday overlap then flags the Guru Pushya subset.

The result is reproducible: the same ephemeris, ayanamsha and sampling rule will return the same 16 rows. Where this page and a panchang disagree, the difference will trace to one of those three choices, most often the ayanamsha or the sunrise convention.

What a muhurat does and does not tell you

The limitations matter as much as the calendar. A muhurat marks a window that tradition considers favourable for the act of purchase. That is the entire claim. It says nothing about the gold price on that day, before it or after it, and buying inside a muhurat window offers no protection against paying a poor price. The observances above recur on their panchanga logic regardless of whether gold is cheap or dear.

The price question is a separate research problem with its own methods and its own falsifiers. Two further caveats. First, the windows here are computed under one ayanamsha and one sunrise convention; a family panchang using Lahiri or a different tithi rule may shift a boundary by some hours, and neither is wrong, they are different frames. Second, tradition itself layers further filters on top of these days, such as avoiding Rahu Kaal within the day, which this calendar does not attempt to arbitrate. The table gives the computed skeleton; observance detail belongs to the buyer's own custom.
