Muntha 2027: the annual chart house table by ascendant and age
Where the Muntha sits for the year that begins at your 2027 birthday, for all twelve ascendants and every age, with the classical house reading, the role of the Muntha lord and a worked example on a public chart.
What the Muntha is, mechanically
Vedic practice carries a second chart beside the birth chart for year-by-year reading: the annual chart, or varshaphal, cast for the instant each year when the Sun returns to the exact sidereal longitude it held at birth. That instant, the solar return, falls within a day or so of the birthday and shifts by hours from year to year. The chart is then read with the Tajika toolkit, a layer of technique with Persian roots that entered Indian practice through Neelakantha's sixteenth-century Tajika Neelakanthi and sits on top of the Parashari foundation. The varshaphal explainer covers the whole system; this page takes one of its parts.
The Muntha is the simplest moving point in that toolkit. At birth it coincides with the ascendant. It then advances one sign for every year of life, so that in the second year it is in the second sign from the birth ascendant and in the thirteenth year it is back in the ascendant sign, where the cycle begins again. It is a progression: nothing in the sky is at the Muntha's position. Its job is to mark, year by year, which house of the chart the year's attention gathers around, and the Tajika authors give it a weight close to that of the annual ascendant itself. Many practitioners also place the Muntha at a degree within its sign, taking the birth ascendant's degree and letting the point drift forward through the sign across the year at about two and a half degrees a month. This page works at sign level, which is what the engine computes and what the house reading needs.
The convention this page uses
Tempora's engine implements the Muntha as the birth ascendant's sign index plus the number of completed years of life at the solar return, taken modulo twelve. Stated in words: the Muntha for the year that begins at a given birthday is the sign that many signs on from the birth ascendant, where the count is the age the person turns on that birthday. A newborn's first year has the Muntha in the ascendant and the year from the first birthday has it in the second sign; the year from the twelfth birthday has it back in the ascendant. Some texts phrase the same rule as the running year number minus one; the results are identical. For 2027 the age in question is simply 2027 minus the birth year, since the year under discussion opens at the 2027 birthday whichever month it falls in.
Two consequences make the table compact. First, the Muntha sign depends only on the birth ascendant and the age, so it is a twelve by twelve grid. Second, the house it occupies counted from the birth ascendant depends only on the age: the remainder after dividing the age by twelve, plus one. Everyone who is 37 in 2027 has the Muntha in the second house from their birth ascendant, whatever that ascendant is; what differs between them is the sign and therefore the Muntha lord. The house counted from the annual chart's own ascendant is a different number and needs the solar return chart; the worked example below shows both.
The table: Muntha for the year beginning at your 2027 birthday
Find the row that holds your age in 2027 or your birth year, then read across to your birth ascendant's column for the Muntha sign. The third column gives the house the Muntha occupies counted from the birth ascendant, which is the same for every ascendant in that row. The table was generated from the engine's Muntha routine and covers ages 0 to 97.

Muntha sign = birth ascendant advanced by (age in 2027) signs, age = 2027 minus birth year; house from birth ascendant = (age modulo 12) + 1. Generated from the engine's Muntha routine; the generator script accompanies this page in the Tempora repository. The year in question runs from your 2027 birthday to your 2028 birthday.
Two readings of the table. A Scorpio ascendant born in 1985 is 42 in 2027; 42 leaves a remainder of 6, so the Muntha is in the seventh house, which for Scorpio is Taurus, with Venus as Muntha lord. A Capricorn ascendant born in 1979 is 48; the remainder is 0, so the Muntha returns to the ascendant sign, Capricorn, with Saturn as Muntha lord, in the first house. The table does one job: it places the Muntha. Reading it is the next section.
Reading the Muntha by house
The Tajika texts give the Muntha's house in the annual chart as one of the primary indicators of the year's theme, and they read it as they read a planet: well placed in the angles and trines, under strain in the sixth, eighth and twelfth. The convention this page follows, drawn from Neelakantha's treatment and the compendia that follow him, counts the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th and 11th houses favourable, the 6th, 8th and 12th difficult and the 3rd and 7th mixed. Authors differ on the 2nd, 3rd and 7th: some place the 7th among the favourable houses and the 2nd among the mixed, and Tempora's own varshaphal explainer records one such variant. Every author agrees on the dusthana verdict for the 6th, 8th and 12th and on the strength of the 10th and 11th. The house meanings below are the ordinary ones.
- 1st house. The year gathers around the self: health, initiative, standing. Read as favourable; the condition of the annual ascendant lord decides how much.
- 2nd house. Money held, family, speech. Favourable in this convention, mixed in some others, so a year where resources and family are in the foreground and the lord's condition tips the balance.
- 3rd house. Effort, siblings, short moves, courage. Mixed: gains through exertion are read as available, ease is not.
- 4th house. Home, property, vehicles, the mother, settledness. Favourable, with the usual proviso that a difficult Muntha lord turns property matters into property work.
- 5th house. Children, study, creative work, speculation. Favourable; the classical texts single it out for recognition and intelligence.
- 6th house. Illness, debt, disputes, service. Difficult: the year is read as one of friction and obligation, softened if benefics hold the house.
- 7th house. Partnership, marriage, the public, contracts. Mixed in this convention: the year turns on others, for good or ill.
- 8th house. Obstacles, losses, anxiety, inheritance. Difficult; the texts are consistently severe here and consistently clear that a strong lord and benefic company moderate the verdict.
- 9th house. Fortune, father, teachers, long journeys, faith. Favourable and often read as the easiest of the favourable placements.
- 10th house. Career, status, public action. Favourable; the year's attention goes to work and position.
- 11th house. Gains, friends, the fulfilment of wishes. Favourable, and in most lists the strongest placement of all.
- 12th house. Expense, loss, foreign residence, withdrawal. Difficult, with the familiar softening for benefics and for charts where the twelfth is already the house of a planned stay abroad.
Two cautions carry across every house. The house in this table is counted from the birth ascendant, which the texts also use; the house counted from the annual chart's own ascendant is the one the Tajika authors weight most, and the two are usually different numbers. And a house verdict read without the Muntha lord is half a reading, which is the subject of the next section.
The Muntha lord and the planets around the Muntha
The Muntha lord is the planet that rules the Muntha's sign. It matters in two ways. First, it is one of the five candidates for lord of the year in the Tajika method: the lords of the annual ascendant and the birth ascendant, the Muntha lord, the tri-rashi lord (chosen from the Sun's sign and whether the return falls by day or night) and the lord of the day or night of the return. The candidate that scores highest on the Tajika strength measures, and that aspects the annual ascendant, becomes the year lord and colours the whole year; authors vary in the exact list and in the tie-breaks. A Muntha lord that wins that contest makes the Muntha's house the year's centre of gravity.
Second, the Muntha lord's own condition in the annual chart modifies the house verdict. The conventional reading is straightforward: a Muntha lord in an angle or trine of the annual chart, in its own or exalted sign, direct and well away from the Sun, delivers the house's promise; a lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th of the annual chart, in its debilitation sign, retrograde or combust, delivers it with friction or withholds it. A favourable Muntha house with a weak lord is read as a promise that has to be worked for; a difficult house with a strong lord is read as a hard year the person is equipped for.
Then the company. Planets in the same sign as the Muntha are read as sitting on the year's theme: Jupiter, Venus, a well-placed Mercury or a bright Moon lift it; Saturn, Mars, Rahu or Ketu press on it, Saturn with delay, Mars with haste and dispute, the nodes with distortion. Aspects in the Tajika method are counted by sign and sorted by temper: planets in the 3rd, 11th, 5th or 9th sign from the Muntha are in friendly aspect and those in the 4th, 10th or 7th in hostile aspect; those in the 2nd, 12th, 6th or 8th do not aspect it at all. A benefic in friendly aspect to the Muntha is read as help arriving on the year's theme from the house that benefic occupies; a malefic in hostile aspect as pressure from that house. The Muntha lord aspecting its own Muntha is a classical mark of a year that holds together.
Worked example: the India 1947 chart
Tempora's worked examples use public anchor charts so the arithmetic can be checked. The Indian independence chart, cast for 00:00 IST on 15 August 1947 at New Delhi under True Pushya Paksha, has a Taurus ascendant at 8 degrees 52 minutes and the Sun at 29 degrees 07 minutes of Cancer. In 2027 the chart turns 80. Eighty leaves a remainder of 8, so the Muntha sits eight signs on from Taurus, in Capricorn, the ninth house from the birth ascendant, with Saturn as Muntha lord. On the convention above that is a favourable house.
The annual chart gives the second count. The engine's solar return search, refined to the minute, puts the Sun back at its natal longitude at 11:47 IST on 15 August 2027. Cast for New Delhi, that moment rises Libra at 16 degrees 14 minutes, so the Muntha in Capricorn falls in the 4th house of the annual chart: favourable on this count too. The planets around it are where the reading gets its texture. The Moon at 6 degrees 53 minutes and Rahu at 17 degrees 45 minutes of Capricorn sit with the Muntha; the Sun and Ketu in Cancer are in the 7th sign from it, a hostile aspect; Mars at 25 degrees of Virgo is in the 9th sign from it, a friendly aspect; and Mercury, Venus and Jupiter, all in Leo, are in the 8th sign from it and do not aspect it. Saturn, the Muntha lord, is at 4 degrees 44 minutes of Aries in the annual 7th house, retrograde since 9 August 2027, in its debilitation sign and in the 4th sign from the Muntha, a hostile aspect from the lord to its own Muntha. The birth chart's running period on the day is the Mars mahadasha with Mercury's antardasha.
| Factor | Value in the 2027 annual chart | Conventional reading |
|---|---|---|
| Solar return | 15 Aug 2027, 11:47 IST, New Delhi | Opens the year under discussion |
| Annual ascendant | Libra 16°14' | Venus is annual ascendant lord |
| Muntha | Capricorn; 9th from birth asc., 4th in annual chart | Favourable on both counts |
| Muntha lord | Saturn, Aries 4°44', retrograde, annual 7th | Weak lord in hostile aspect to its own Muntha |
| Conjunct the Muntha | Moon 6°53', Rahu 17°45' Capricorn | Public mood on the theme; nodal distortion |
| Friendly aspects | Mars (Virgo, 9th from Muntha) | Help through effort |
| Hostile aspects | Sun and Ketu (Cancer, 7th); Saturn (Aries, 4th) | Pressure from authority and from the lord |
| No aspect | Mercury, Venus, Jupiter (Leo, 8th from Muntha) | The benefics do not reach the Muntha |
Put in a sentence, the textbook reading would be: a year whose attention gathers around the fourth-house matters of land, housing, infrastructure and public contentment, placed favourably on both counts, but carried by a Muntha lord that is debilitated, retrograde and hostile to its own point, with Rahu on the Muntha and the benefics out of reach. That is the kind of statement the method produces, and it is offered here only to show the method, with no forecast for India intended; Tempora's mundane calls go through the Tracker with a stated test condition, and a national reading would need the national dasha sequence and the other annual factors before it said anything that could be scored.
Limits
Birth time matters more than it looks. The sign-level Muntha is stable: it depends on the birth ascendant sign and the age, and only a birth ascendant within a degree or two of a sign boundary puts it at risk. The annual chart is another matter. The solar return is the moment the Sun reaches its natal longitude, so an error in the birth time moves the natal Sun's longitude and with it the return moment by almost the same number of minutes. Four minutes of birth-time error moves the annual ascendant by about a degree; twenty minutes moves it by about five. A rising sign near a boundary flips, the Muntha's annual house changes by one, and the identity of the year lord can change with it. The worked example above uses the conventional midnight time for the India chart and inherits whatever uncertainty that convention carries.
Place matters too. The annual chart is cast for a place, and practice varies between the birthplace and the place of residence at the return. The example uses New Delhi, the birthplace. A person born in Mumbai and living in London gets a different annual ascendant from the two conventions, and the texts do not settle it.
The Muntha is one factor among several. The Tajika method reads the year from the year lord, the annual ascendant and its lord, the Muntha and its lord, the Tajika aspects between planets, the sensitive points the texts call sahams and an annual dasha sequence, the Mudda dasha, that breaks the year into periods. The Muntha alone is a single indicator, and the texts themselves rank the year lord above it. A Muntha reading that is not checked against the year lord is incomplete by the method's own standard.
The annual chart sits on the dasha; it does not replace it. Nothing in the annual chart overrides the birth chart's running period. The usual teaching is that the annual chart shows how the dasha's promise is delivered in a given year, and a Muntha in a favourable house during a dasha that does not promise the matter stays a quiet favourable placement. The Vimshottari dasha calculator table gives the period dates, and Vimshottari is itself one of several dasha systems.
Not validated statistically. Tempora has not backtested Muntha house placements against outcomes and is not aware of a published study with a base rate. The rule is classical, internally consistent and stated precisely enough to compute, which is what this page does. Precision in computing a rule is not evidence that the rule works. Hold the reading as a structured hypothesis about the year's theme and check it against the year.
Where this sits on the shelf
The annual chart is one of three timing layers Tempora writes about for 2027, and this page is the Muntha strand. The varshaphal explainer and the older varshaphala method note cover the solar return, the year lord and the Tajika dashas. The transit layer for the same year is in 2027 by ascendant and its twelve sign pages: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces, with Saturn transit 2027 carrying the year's main sign change. The dasha layer is in the Vimshottari table. For a reading that puts all three layers against your own chart for the coming year, the Full briefing is the long form; the free Imprint is where to start.
Frequently asked
What is the Muntha in the annual chart?
The Muntha is a moving point used in the Tajaka annual chart, the chart cast for the moment each year when the Sun returns to its birth position. It starts in the birth ascendant sign and advances one sign for every completed year of life, so it returns to the ascendant every twelve years. For the year that begins at a person's 2027 birthday it sits as many signs on from the birth ascendant as the person's age in 2027. Its house in the annual chart, its lord and the planets with it are read as one of the main indicators of the year's theme.
How do I find my Muntha for 2027?
Take your age at your 2027 birthday, which is 2027 minus your birth year, and count that many signs forward from your birth ascendant sign, counting the ascendant itself as zero. Because the cycle repeats every twelve years, only the remainder after dividing the age by twelve matters, and the house the Muntha occupies from the birth ascendant is that remainder plus one. Someone with a Leo ascendant born in 1990 is 37 in 2027; 37 leaves a remainder of 1, so the Muntha sits in Virgo, the second house from the birth ascendant. The table on this page lists every ascendant and every age.
Which Muntha houses are favourable and which are difficult?
In the convention this page follows, drawn from the Tajaka texts, the Muntha in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th or 11th house is counted favourable, in the 6th, 8th or 12th difficult and in the 3rd or 7th mixed. Practice varies between authors on the 2nd, 3rd and 7th, and every author reads the house together with the Muntha lord and the planets conjunct or aspecting the Muntha, so a favourable house with an afflicted lord is read very differently from the same house with a well-placed one.
What is the Muntha lord and why does it matter?
The Muntha lord is the planet that rules the sign the Muntha occupies. In the Tajaka method it is one of the five candidates for lord of the year, alongside the lords of the annual and birth ascendants and two others, so a strong Muntha lord can become the planet that colours the whole year. Its house in the annual chart, whether it is retrograde or combust and the planets it is with all modify how the Muntha's own house is read. A Muntha in a favourable house whose lord sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th of the annual chart is read as a promise with friction attached.
Does the Muntha change if my birth time is uncertain?
The sign-level Muntha depends only on your birth ascendant sign and your age, so it is stable unless your ascendant sits within a degree or two of a sign boundary. The annual chart around it is far more sensitive. It is cast for the exact moment the Sun returns to its birth longitude, and an error of four minutes in the birth time shifts that moment by about four minutes and the annual chart's ascendant by about one degree. A rising sign near a boundary can therefore change, and with it the house the Muntha occupies in the annual chart and the identity of the year lord.
How do I find how the 2027 Muntha applies to my own chart?
How the 2027 Muntha reaches you depends on four things in your own birth chart: your birth ascendant, your age at your 2027 birthday, the exact solar return moment for your birth time and place and the dasha period running through the year. Kaal Imprint draws your chart for free from your date, time and place of birth, on the same Swiss Ephemeris and True Pushya Paksha calculation this page uses, and answers a question you ask against it.

This page applies the classical Tajika rule for the Muntha to the year beginning at a reader's 2027 birthday, with the worked example computed sidereally under the True Pushya Paksha ayanamsa via Swiss Ephemeris and dated in IST. House verdicts follow one stated convention and practice varies between authors; the rule has not been validated statistically. The annual chart depends on the exact birth time and on the place it is cast for, and individual charts vary in ways a method page cannot capture.
