Search for a kundli matching site and you get a dozen tools that all return a number out of 36. They rarely return the same number for the same couple. That is not because one of them is doing bad arithmetic. Ashtakoot guna milan is a short, fully specified calculation, and any competent implementation gets the same answer from the same inputs. The disagreements come from upstream, where the inputs are decided.

What actually decides accuracy
1. The ayanamsa
A Vedic chart is a tropical position minus the ayanamsa, the accumulated offset between the two zodiacs. In 2026 that offset runs at roughly 23 to 24 degrees depending on which system you pick, and the systems do not agree with each other. Lahiri Chitrapaksha and True Pushya Paksha differ by about 1.13 degrees this year, roughly 68 arc-minutes.
Against a 30-degree sign that sounds like a rounding error. Against a nakshatra it is not. Each nakshatra spans 13 degrees 20 minutes, and the Moon crosses a degree in a little under two hours. A Moon sitting within about a degree of a nakshatra boundary changes nakshatra when the ayanamsa changes. Change the Moon's nakshatra and you change Nadi, Bhakoot and Gana koota, which between them carry 8, 7 and 6 of the 36 points. A boundary Moon can therefore swing the total by up to 21 points without anyone touching the birth data.
This is why the ayanamsa belongs on the results page. It is the difference between a score you can reproduce and a score you have to take on trust. The reasoning behind the frame Tempora uses is set out in True Pushya Paksha versus Lahiri.
2. How the tool handles a missing birth time
Seven of the eight kootas read off the Moon's nakshatra or its rasi. The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so it is the one body in the chart where an hour of error is visible in the result. Leave the time blank and something has to be assumed. What matters is whether the tool tells you it assumed anything. The worked example below shows what that silence costs.
3. Whether the output shows its working
A single number out of 36 cannot be checked. A per-koota table can. If a tool prints Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi with both partners' values beside each, you can see which koota carried the score and which one sank it, and you can compare that row by row against another tool. What omitting birth time does to a Moon-based score
Guna milan is scored from the Moon. Seven of the eight kootas read off the Moon's nakshatra or its rasi, so all 36 points rest on where the Moon stood at the moment of birth. The Moon covers about 13 degrees a day, roughly one nakshatra every 24 hours. A birth time out by twelve hours moves it by about six and a half degrees, half a nakshatra. If the Moon was already near a boundary, it lands in the next one.

Same two people, same engine, one empty field. A couple moves from very good to not recommended, and the second page carries exactly as much authority as the first.
Nothing in that is a fault in Prokerala's arithmetic. Both runs computed correctly from what they were given, midnight is a defensible default and a form with a default does what defaults do. The problem sits with what a reader does next, having no way to know that a number was filled in on their behalf.
Credit where it is owed, and it is owed here. Prokerala produced the most transparent output of the five. It prints the full per-koota Ashtakoot table with both partners' values side by side, adds the Mangal Dosha report and both Rasi charts, then gates none of it behind a login, an email address or a phone number. That openness is precisely why it works as the reproducible example: the working is on the page, so the shift between the two runs is visible rather than asserted.
ClickAstro handles the same case differently and is the only one of the five that does. Its form carries an explicit "I don't know my Birth time" option, which turns the assumption into a choice the user makes rather than a default they never saw. That is the right shape for this problem regardless of which tool ships it.
Tempora's own tool had the same gap when this page was drafted. Kaal Match left the birth time optional, computed a blank one at noon and flagged only the partner's side, so a querent who left their own time empty was scored on an assumption they were never shown. What none of this settles
A guna milan total is a Moon-to-Moon summary. It says nothing about the seventh house in either chart, nothing about where the dashas of the two people sit against each other and nothing about the navamsa beyond whatever a given tool chooses to layer on. GaneshaSpeaks says as much on its own tool page. The scoring is also asymmetric in a way readers rarely notice: Nadi is binary and carries 8 points, so two otherwise well-matched charts can lose almost a quarter of the total on one boundary, and the classical cancellations for it are widely omitted from free tools. Manglik dosha gets flagged by every tool here that flags anything and is qualified by almost none of them.
Treat any single number as one input. Where Tempora publishes dated calls with pass and fail conditions attached, they are scored in public on the forward-call tracker. This page carries no forward call, only observations with a date on them.
