Nadi Dosha: the Heaviest Kuta, and Exactly One Pair in Three Fails It

Published 22 September 2026

Nadi carries 8 of the 36 points in guna milan, more than any other kuta, and it is scored as all or nothing. Match and you take all eight. Share a nadi and you take none. Because the 27 nakshatras divide into three nadi groups of exactly nine, the arithmetic is not close: one third of all nakshatra pairings share a nadi. That single rule is why so many otherwise strong matches come back short.

What nadi is

Nadi is a threefold constitutional classification applied to each of the 27 nakshatras: Aadi, Madhya and Antya. The tradition reads it as a physiological grouping and holds that partners sharing a nadi are constitutionally too alike, with the concern historically expressed in terms of progeny and health.

Nine nakshatras in each group, assigned in a repeating forward-then-reverse pattern across the sequence. The even split is what makes the failure rate exact.

The computed failure rate

With three groups of nine, the probability that two independently drawn nakshatras share a nadi is the sum of the squared group proportions, which is three times one ninth, or exactly one third. Running all 729 ordered nakshatra pairs through our scorer with no sign information supplied returns the same figure: 486 pairs score the full 8 and 243 score 0, which is 66.7 against 33.3 per cent.

The consequence is arithmetic. A pair that would otherwise score 26 of 36, comfortably above the conventional recommendation line, scores 18 if it fails nadi alone. Nothing else about the two charts has changed. One kuta, scored all or nothing, moved the verdict.

The cancellations, and why they matter more than the dosha

The classical literature does not treat nadi dosha as absolute, and our scorer applies a conservative set of the documented exceptions. Where the two people share a nadi but occupy different nakshatras within the same moon sign, the dosha is treated as cancelled. Where the moon signs differ but their lords are the same planet or are mutual friends in the classical scheme, the same applies.

This is where published matching tools diverge most sharply and say least. A tool that applies no cancellations will fail one pair in three. A tool that applies a generous set will fail far fewer. Both will present the result as the score, and neither will usually tell you which set it used. Our scorer states the exception it applied in the reason string attached to the kuta.

Nadi inherits the birth-time problem

Nadi is read from the Moon's nakshatra, and the Moon crosses roughly one nakshatra a day. A birth recorded as a date with no time therefore leaves the nadi in question for either partner, and because nadi is the heaviest kuta and scored all or nothing, an assumed birth time can move the total by 8 points on its own.

That is the largest single swing available to a missing field anywhere in guna milan, and it is the mechanism behind the reproducible demonstration on our birth time page, where the same two people scored 24.5 of 36 with birth times supplied and 22.5 without, crossing the recommendation line.

What this page does not say

It does not say nadi dosha is meaningless, and it does not say a failing pair should proceed or should not. It reports what the rule is, how often it fires and how much it moves the number, because those three things are checkable and are almost never stated. The decision that follows belongs to the families involved and usually to an astrologer who has seen both charts in full, which a 36 point score is not.

Method

Nakshatra to nadi assignment follows the standard classical mapping. The failure rate is computed analytically from the group sizes and confirmed by scoring all 729 ordered nakshatra pairs through the same kuta function used in the live product. Moon positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris under the True Pushya Paksha ayanamsa by PVRN Rao.

Questions

What is nadi dosha?

Nadi is a threefold classification of the 27 nakshatras into Aadi, Madhya and Antya, nine in each. When both partners fall in the same group the pair scores zero of the eight nadi points in guna milan, which is the heaviest single kuta in the 36 point system.

How common is nadi dosha?

Exactly one pair in three. The 27 nakshatras split evenly into three groups of nine, so the probability that two independently drawn nakshatras share a nadi is one third. Scoring all 729 ordered pairs returns 243 failures against 486 passes, which is 33.3 per cent.

How many points does nadi dosha cost?

Eight of 36, scored all or nothing. A pair scoring 26 of 36 drops to 18 if nadi fails and nothing else changes, which can move a match from above the conventional recommendation line to below it.

Can nadi dosha be cancelled?

The classical literature documents exceptions and our scorer applies a conservative set of them: different nakshatras within the same moon sign, and differing moon signs whose lords are the same planet or classical friends. Tools differ widely in which exceptions they apply and rarely state which, which is why two sites can return different verdicts on the same pair.

Does a missing birth time affect nadi?

Considerably. Nadi is read from the Moon nakshatra and the Moon crosses about one nakshatra a day, so an unspecified birth time leaves the nadi uncertain. Because the kuta is scored all or nothing and carries eight points, an assumed time can move the total by eight points on its own.
