Kundli Matching Without a Birth Time: the Verdict Can Flip
Published 11 September 2026 · Last updated 11 September 2026
Most matching sites accept an empty birth time field and return a score anyway. They do not tell you what they filled in. We ran the same two people through the same engine twice, once with birth times and once without. The score moved from 24.5 of 36 to 22.5, which crossed the line that separates a recommended match from one that is not. Nothing about the couple changed. One field was empty.
The demonstration
Two birth records, one engine, two runs. The first run carried both birth times. The second left the time field empty on one side, exactly as a visitor would if they did not know it.
| Run | Guna milan score | Conventional verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Both birth times supplied | 24.5 of 36 | Above the recommendation threshold |
| One birth time left empty | 22.5 of 36 | Below it |
Two points of thirty six, and the pair moves across the boundary most families are told to read as the decision. The second run is what a site returns when it silently supplies a time of its own.
Why the Moon is the whole problem
Guna milan is scored from the Moon. All eight kutas, the full thirty six points, derive from the Moon's nakshatra and rashi in each chart. Nothing else in the chart enters the score.
The Moon is the fastest body in the chart. It crosses one of the twenty seven nakshatras roughly every day, which means it can change nakshatra inside a single twenty four hour window. A birth recorded as a date with no time is a Moon that could be in one of two nakshatras, sometimes at either end of a compatibility table. Every kuta scored from it moves with it.
This is why a missing time is not a small loss of precision. For a chart read from the ascendant, an unknown time costs you the houses and leaves the planets roughly intact. For guna milan specifically, it puts the one variable the entire score depends on into question.
What sites do with an empty field
They fill it. The common substitutions are noon, midnight or sunrise, and the result is presented with the same confidence as a fully specified chart. The visitor sees a number and a verdict and has no indication that a value was invented on their behalf.
We checked the five largest kundli matching sites in India on 16 August 2026. None of them states which ayanamsa it uses, and none flags a substituted birth time in the result. A reader who wants to know whether their score rests on a real Moon position or an assumed one has no way to find out.
What Kaal Match does
It states which side was assumed. If a birth time is missing, the result says so, names the side it applies to and carries the caveat into the reading rather than into a footnote. The score is still computed, because a family with one unknown time still needs an answer, and the answer arrives labelled.
The ayanamsa is stated too: True Pushya Paksha, on every page, with Swiss Ephemeris positions and whole sign houses. That is the front of the bottle. A reader can reproduce the arithmetic or dispute it, which is the point of printing it.
If you genuinely do not know the time
Three honest options, in the order worth trying.
Find the record. Indian birth certificates issued by a municipal corporation frequently carry the time. Hospital discharge summaries and old family records are the next place to look. A recovered time is worth more than any technique applied to its absence.
Narrow it to a window. Families often remember the part of the day even when the hour is lost. Morning against evening is frequently enough to settle which nakshatra the Moon occupied, and a score computed across a stated window with the range shown is more honest than a single number from an invented minute.
Read what does not depend on it. Planetary positions other than the Moon move slowly enough that a day is a small error. Dasha periods computed from an assumed Moon carry the same uncertainty as the Moon, so they inherit the problem. The sections of a reading that survive an unknown time are worth separating from the sections that do not, and a reading that does not separate them is overstating what it knows.
What this page is not saying
It is not saying a score computed without a birth time is worthless. It is saying the number should arrive with a label, because two points of thirty six decided by an assumed minute is the difference between a match a family proceeds with and one they do not. The objection is to the silence, not to the substitution.
Questions
Can kundli matching be done without a birth time?
Yes, and most sites will do it without telling you. The score is computed from a substituted time, commonly noon, midnight or sunrise. The result is a real calculation on an assumed input, and the honest version of it says so.
How much does a missing birth time change the score?
It can cross the recommendation threshold. In our reproducible demonstration the same two people scored 24.5 of 36 with birth times and 22.5 without, which moves the pair from above the conventional line to below it.
Why does the birth time matter so much for guna milan?
All thirty six points derive from the Moon. The Moon crosses one of the twenty seven nakshatras about every day, so an unspecified time leaves the one variable the entire score depends on in question.
Which matching sites disclose an assumed birth time?
We checked the five largest in India on 16 August 2026. None flags a substituted time in the result and none states its ayanamsa. Kaal Match states which side was assumed.
What should I do if the birth time is genuinely unknown?
Look for a municipal birth certificate or hospital record first, since many Indian certificates carry the time. Failing that, narrow it to a part of the day and read the score as a range. Treat any section of a reading that depends on the Moon as carrying the same uncertainty.
