Ketu Mahadasha: how to read the 7-year period
The 7-year Ketu period in the Vimshottari major-period system. What Ketu signifies, how natal house and dispositor shape the texture, the eight antardasha sub-periods, transit confirmation and what the framework does not predict.
The Ketu Mahadasha runs 7 years. It is the second of nine planetary periods in the Vimshottari major-period system. The period opens with a clean cut from whatever the prior 6-year Sun Mahadasha was building and it tends to read as a separation-and-internalisation window. Across the 7 years, external markers of identity loosen. Careers, relationships, locations and self-images that no longer carry karmic charge tend to end. The native is pulled toward whatever the chart signals as the soul's actual orientation.
This is the texture in the abstract. The actual reading for any given chart depends on three layers: Ketu's natal house, Ketu's dispositor (the planet ruling the sign Ketu occupies) and the antardasha sub-period sequence inside the 7 years. This article walks each layer. The eight individual antardasha sub-periods each have their own method article, linked below in sequence.
Where it falls in the Vimshottari sequence
The Vimshottari system runs nine mahadashas in a fixed sequence totalling 120 years: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17. Ketu occupies the first position in the cycle and runs 7 years. Which mahadasha a native is born into depends on the natal Moon's nakshatra and how far through that nakshatra the Moon had travelled at the moment of birth.
Ketu is the first mahadasha in the Vimshottari sequence (followed by Venus 20 years). Natives born with the Moon in Ketu-ruled nakshatras (Ashwini, Magha, Moola) open life in the Ketu Mahadasha and proceed through the full 120-year cycle from this starting point.
Ketu's karaka nature
Ketu is the karaka for dissolution, moksha (liberation) and the past-life-karma register. Like Rahu, Ketu is a shadow planet (chhaya graha) without physical body, the South Node of the Moon. Careers in research, occult-or-spiritual fields, computer-coding (the abstract-pattern register), surgery, fire-related professions (military, demolition, metallurgy) and contemplative-research often peak during the Ketu Mahadasha for natives with Ketu well placed natally.
The Sanskrit name Ketu derives from the headless body of Svarbhanu in the classical churning-of-the-ocean mythology (see the Rahu entry for the full narrative). Ketu is the immortal-headless register: dissolution of identity while preserving the karmic-essence. The classical reading frames Ketu as the past-life karma marker, the inherited spiritual-fire that shapes the present chart's moksha trajectory.
Dignity: exaltation, own signs, debilitation
Ketu exalted in Scorpio or Sagittarius (classical sources differ). Maximum natal strength. The 7-year period operates with maximum ketu-register support. Natives with Ketu exalted in Scorpio or Sagittarius (classical sources differ) typically experience the mahadasha as flowing with unusual ease in the karaka domain.
Ketu in own sign no own sign. The own-sign placement carries the ketu qualities with the stability of familiar territory, close to exaltation-strength without the elevation but with reliability across the 7-year period.
Mooltrikona: no mooltrikona. The mooltrikona band within the own sign is the strongest functional placement after exaltation. The classical readings give mooltrikona-Ketu the ketu signification in its most direct and operative form.
Ketu debilitated in Taurus or Gemini (classical sources differ). The classical tradition reads debilitated Ketu as reducing the ease of the ketu-register. The debilitation does not cancel the mahadasha's fundamental signature but introduces friction into it. Neecha Bhanga (debilitation cancellation) is possible under specific configurations and is read separately.
Combustion. Ketu as a shadow body is not classically subject to combustion in the same way as the seven physical planets. The classical readings of Ketu in proximity to the Sun emphasise the eclipse-axis activation rather than a combustion-friction effect.
Classical friend-enemy scheme. Ketu's friends are Mars and Venus. Enemies are Sun and Moon. Neutral planets are Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn. This friendship matrix shapes the antardasha sub-period readings: friend-sub-periods read constructively, enemy-sub-periods read with more friction.
Additional dignity factors. Ketu is classically read through the dispositor (sign-ruler) and the conjoining planets rather than through its own sign dignity. Ketu in a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) supports moksha-axis dharmic events. Ketu in a dusthana (6th, 8th, 12th) classically intensifies hidden-or-spiritual themes.
How natal house shapes the reading
Ketu's natal house tells the reader which life domain carries the ketu-reading most strongly during the 7-year period. The house gives the surface domain. The dispositor gives the underlying mechanism. Both are read together.
Ketu in the 1st house. The self as dissolution. The 7-year mahadasha reads as a period of identity-questioning, spiritual-search and significant detachment events. Ketu in the 1st often produces seeker-presented natives whose self-image carries renunciative quality.
Ketu in the 2nd house. Wealth-dissolution and family-of-origin detachment. The 7-year window often produces detachment from accumulated wealth, family-line spiritual events or significant speech-related contemplative practice (mantra, silence).
Ketu in the 3rd house. Initiative through detachment and younger-sibling spiritual events. Ketu in the 3rd reads as research-axis communication, defining publishing-with-spiritual-register or significant younger-sibling-detachment arcs.
Ketu in the 4rd house. Home, mother and the spiritual-foundation register. Ketu in the 4th classically reads as home-dissolution events, mother-line spiritual transmission or significant real-estate-detachment arcs.
Ketu in the 5rd house. Children, dharmic-creativity and devotional-spiritual fire. Ketu in the 5th reads as spiritual-creative output, defining devotional-practice arcs or significant children-detachment events. The 7-year window can produce mantra-meditation breakthroughs.
Ketu in the 6rd house. Service, conflict and the dissolution-of-enemies register. Ketu in the 6th is classically a strong placement (upachaya + Ketu's victory-through-dissolution natural register). The 7-year window often produces defining victory-through-renunciation, healing-profession spiritual work or significant health-axis spiritual events.
Ketu in the 7rd house. Partnership and the spiritual-marriage register. Ketu in the 7th classically reads as marriage-detachment, spiritual-partnership or significant relationship-renunciation events. The 7-year window often produces the renunciative-or-spiritual aspect of relationship life.
Ketu in the 8rd house. Transformation, occult-research and hidden-spiritual register. Ketu in the 8th is classically a very strong placement (Ketu's natural-occult-register + 8th-house transformation-house). The 7-year window often produces defining occult-research arcs, kundalini-or-tantric-practice events or significant past-life-axis confrontation.
Ketu in the 9rd house. Dharma, father-line spiritual events and higher-purpose-dissolution. Ketu in the 9th reads as spiritual-dharma arcs, foreign-religious-residency, father-line spiritual transmission or significant moksha-axis-philosophical work.
Ketu in the 10th house. Career through spiritual-fire and dissolution-domain work. Ketu in the 10th supports careers in research (especially occult-or-pattern-recognition), demolition-and-fire-related work, surgery, military-special-operations or contemplative-leadership.
Ketu in the 11th house. Gains from spiritual-networks and elder-sibling renunciation. Ketu in the 11th reads as income-from-spiritual or research-domain channels, elder-sibling spiritual events or significant network-detachment arcs.
Ketu in the 12th house. Foreign moksha, hospital-administration and the moksha-axis-maximum register. Ketu in the 12th is the most spiritually-prominent placement (own-natural-house-equivalent). The 7-year window often produces defining moksha-axis events: monastic-residency, hospital-administration with spiritual register, significant foreign-spiritual practice.
Dispositor analysis
Ketu's reading depends heavily on the dispositor (the planet ruling Ketu's sign). Ketu has no own sign, so dispositor analysis is the central mechanism for the 7-year period.
Ketu in Scorpio: dispositor is Mars. Ketu in Scorpio (often read as exaltation, friend-sign Mars dispositor). The 7-year period reads with maximum occult-spiritual intensity: kundalini-or-tantric-practice arcs, defining transformation-axis events.
Ketu in Sagittarius: dispositor is Jupiter. Ketu in Sagittarius (neutral Jupiter dispositor). The 7-year period often produces dharmic-spiritual work: monastic-teaching, philosophical-renunciation or significant foreign-pilgrimage arcs.
Ketu in Pisces: dispositor is Jupiter. Ketu in Pisces (neutral Jupiter dispositor with moksha-axis amplification). The 7-year period often produces significant moksha-axis events: contemplative practice deepening, hospital-or-ashram administration.
Ketu in Aries: dispositor is Mars. Ketu in Aries (friend-sign Mars dispositor) supports decisive-spiritual moves: spiritual-warrior register, ascetic-discipline arcs, defining renunciation events.
Ketu in Cancer: dispositor is Moon. Ketu in Cancer (enemy-sign Moon dispositor). The 7-year period often produces emotional-spiritual tension: mother-line detachment events, defining home-renunciation arcs.
The 9 antardasha sub-periods
The Vimshottari sub-periods inside the 7-year Ketu Mahadasha run through all nine planets in proportion to their mahadasha lengths. Each sub-period activates a different pairing with the Ketu mahalord. Friend-pair sub-periods read constructively, enemy-pair sub-periods read with more friction. The full reading for each pairing is at the dedicated antardasha article linked in the table.
| Antardasha | Duration | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| Ketu | 147 days | Pure Ketu signature, opens and closes the 7-year window. Defining moksha-axis-dissolution events at one of the two endpoints. |
| Venus | 420 days | Ketu-Venus brings dissolution and pleasure together (friend-pair). Detachment from worldly-pleasure events, spiritual-relationship arcs or significant aesthetic-renunciation events. |
| Sun | 126 days | Ketu-Sun brings dissolution and authority together (enemy-pair). Authority-detachment events, father-line spiritual transmission or significant identity-dissolution moments. |
| Moon | 210 days | Ketu-Moon brings dissolution and emotional life together (enemy-pair). Mother-line spiritual events, emotional-renunciation arcs, defining mind-detachment moments. |
| Mars | 147 days | Ketu-Mars brings dissolution and action together (friend-pair). Decisive-spiritual moves, surgical events, sibling-line spiritual arcs. |
| Rahu | 378 days | Ketu-Rahu brings the node-pair together (the karmically-decisive sub-period of the Ketu mahadasha). Eclipse-axis activation at maximum, defining past-life-axis events, foreign-spiritual residency. |
| Jupiter | 336 days | Ketu-Jupiter brings dissolution and dharma together (neutral pair). Spiritual-teaching events, dharmic-renunciation arcs or significant moksha-axis dharmic transmission. |
| Saturn | 399 days | Ketu-Saturn brings dissolution and structure together (neutral pair). Sustained-spiritual practice arcs, monastic-discipline, defining structural-renunciation events. |
| Mercury | 357 days | Ketu-Mercury brings dissolution and intelligence together (neutral pair). Research-axis spiritual work, contemplative-writing arcs or significant translation-and-cross-cultural spiritual events. |
By natal ascendant
Ketu's functional reading shifts with the ascendant. The houses Ketu rules and the dignity Ketu carries for each lagna determine whether Ketu reads as functional benefic, functional malefic or yogakaraka for that ascendant. The per-ascendant readings are at the dedicated articles linked below.

Transit confirmation protocol
The Ketu mahadasha reading anchors against natal Ketu's house position and the Rahu-Ketu axis. Watch Ketu's 18-year orbital cycle (Ketu returns to natal position once every approximately 18.6 years), eclipse cycles (solar and lunar eclipses occur on the Rahu-Ketu axis) and Ketu transit conjunctions to natal planets. Ketu's transit often coincides with renunciative or research-axis events.
Forward-call grounding
Ketu signatures are not directly used as forward-call triggers in the current calibrated lift table. Ketu's role in the framework is structural (it shapes the Vimshottari sequence start-point and intersects with eclipse-axis activations) rather than independently calibrated.
What the framework does not predict
The mahadasha reading is structural. The 7-year Ketu period names a register and a karaka domain; it does not generate forward calls by itself. Calibration is by chart and signature class, not by mahadasha membership. The personal reading depends on natal Ketu's house, sign dignity, dispositor strength, conjoining planets, aspecting planets, the running antardasha and the simultaneous transit picture. The framework is explicit about this scope limit.
Classical sources
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) Chapter 38 covers Ketu mahadasha effects (treated jointly with Rahu given the node-axis nature). The 7-year duration matches Mars's 7-year period and Sun's 6-year period as the shortest single-mahadasha bracket.
Ketu mahadasha by ascendant
Ketu owns no sign either, and its 7-year period delivers the significations of its natal house and dispositor by subtraction rather than accumulation. The ascendant supplies the whole-sign grid that subtraction works through, which is why the same seven years read as excavation for one lagna and bereavement for another. The condensed readings below summarise the twelve dedicated ascendant pages linked above.
Aries ascendant
Mars rules the 1st and 8th houses from Aries lagna, so the body, the will and crisis-handling run on one planet that answers most questions with action. Ketu defunds that wiring, and the seven years tend to read as enforced simplification: the period sorts the chart's initiatives into the ones that were structural and the ones that were merely momentum. The long sub-periods carry the story, Venus on the 2nd and 7th, Saturn on the 10th and 11th, with Jupiter's 9th-and-12th months as the classical relief window. Natal Ketu in the 8th, 9th or 12th reads cleanest for this ascendant; the 1st, 7th and 10th are the friction seats. Nothing here is datable without birth data.
Taurus ascendant
Venus rules the 1st and 6th houses from Taurus lagna and Saturn works as the chart's yogakaraka, ruling the 9th and 10th together. Ketu's seven years audit a chart organised around holding: possessions, routines and fixed positions get tested for whether each held thing is load-bearing or merely heavy. The fourteen-month Ketu-Venus antardasha touches body, habits and daily work directly; Ketu-Saturn, the longest of the nine, stress-tests career and dharma rather than dismantling them; Ketu-Jupiter links to shared assets, inheritance lines and network gains through the 8th and 11th. The cleanest natal seats are the 12th, 8th and 9th; the hardest are the 2nd, 11th and the ascendant itself. Dates require birth data.
Gemini ascendant
Mercury rules the 1st and 4th houses from Gemini lagna, so even the private ground of home gets processed as language, and Ketu's withdrawal is often felt first as a loss of interest in explaining oneself. The seven years reduce the chart's open tabs: fewer channels, fewer positions to defend. The final twelve months, Ketu-Mercury, land on identity and home base at once; Jupiter carries the 7th and 10th together, so its eleven-month sub-period is where marriage and career register the subtraction most visibly; Venus ruling the 5th and 12th gives the long early Ketu-Venus stretch a retreat-toned creative character. Natal Ketu sits easiest in the 12th, 8th or 9th and hardest in the 1st, 3rd or 10th.
Cancer ascendant
The Moon owns the Cancer lagna, which makes this the least compatible equipment of the twelve: a chart that metabolises life through belonging meets a lord whose method is removal, and each release tends to register as a small bereavement first and a relief only afterwards. Mars remains yogakaraka, ruling the 5th and 10th, so Ketu-Mars is the hinge sub-period for work and standing, while Ketu-Saturn, the longest antardasha at 1 year 1 month 9 days, presses the 7th and 8th houses of partnership and shared assets. Transit Ketu crosses Cancer itself from 27 December 2026 to 15 July 2028, so current Cancer risings can meet the transit and the dasha at once.
Leo ascendant
The Sun rules the Leo lagna alone, and in a chart where being someone and being seen are close to the same operation, Ketu removes the lighting: the seven years audit which parts of the self survive without applause. The fixed sign often holds position for several years, then strikes the unused stage set comparatively quickly. Ketu-Venus at 1 year 2 months is the career sub-period, since Venus rules the 10th and 3rd here; Ketu-Sun at 4 months 6 days is short but personal, the lagna lord itself under the dissolver; Mars, the yogakaraka ruling the 4th and 9th, steadies the period wherever it is strong. The window ends by handing the chart to the 20-year Venus mahadasha.
Virgo ascendant
Mercury rules the 1st and 10th houses from Virgo lagna, fusing identity with work, so subtraction anywhere in the chart tends to be felt as a career question, and things end without stating their reasons in a chart built to reconcile ledgers. The distribution of lords leaves the period gentler on money and rougher on role. Ketu-Jupiter at 11 months 6 days reaches the 4th and 7th at once, home and marriage in a single window, and Ketu-Mercury, the final 11 months 27 days, passes the lagna lord itself under the node and closes the whole period. The friendliest natal seats are the 12th and 9th; the exposed ones are the 1st and 10th.
Libra ascendant
Venus rules the 1st and 8th houses from Libra lagna, so identity and rupture answer to one lord and the subtraction concentrates on relational identity in a chart calibrated toward the other person. Saturn is the classical yogakaraka here as lord of the 4th and 5th, and Ketu-Saturn at 1 year 1 month 9 days is the structural test of the window, while Ketu-Venus at 1 year 2 months works the marriage-and-crisis axis directly. Interiority arrives, but it has to displace a social self first. Natal Ketu in the 12th or 9th tends to sit easiest; the 1st, 7th and 10th are the exposed seats. The window closes by handing over to Venus's own 20-year period.
Scorpio ascendant
Scorpio rising meets the node at home: Jataka Parijata and several later compendia count Scorpio among Ketu's positions of strength, and one strand of tradition assigns the sign's co-lordship to Ketu alongside Mars. Mars owns the 1st and 6th here, identity forged through friction, and Ketu quiets the friction without dissolving the identity, so the seven years read as excavation rather than loss. Ketu-Venus at 1 year 2 months is the exposed stretch, since Venus holds both the 7th and 12th, partner and loss under a single lord; Ketu-Saturn audits home and effort through the 3rd and 4th. The affinity is a classical characterization rather than a statistic, and the natal chart still decides.
Sagittarius ascendant
Jupiter rules the 1st and 4th houses from Sagittarius lagna, tying identity and inner ground to the planet of meaning itself, so Ketu's withdrawal reaches beliefs before possessions and the period reads as disillusionment in the strict sense, the removal of illusions. Ketu-Jupiter at 11 months 6 days filters the lagna lord through release, the most personal stretch of the seven years, and Ketu-Mercury at 11 months 27 days closes the mahadasha on the 7th and 10th, giving partnership and career the final edit. Natal Ketu in the 12th sits in Scorpio for this lagna, aligning the moksha house with the sign of Ketu's classical strength. These are lordship arguments rather than measured probabilities.
Capricorn ascendant
Saturn rules the 1st and 2nd houses from Capricorn lagna, so identity and stored value sit on one planet, and Venus, the yogakaraka, holds career and creative recognition through the 5th and 10th. The seven years land on standing: the period removes the appetite for the audience, and titles are often retained while the motive that made them worth holding quietly drains. The heavy sub-periods are Ketu-Venus, carrying the 5th and 10th, and Ketu-Saturn, carrying the 1st and 2nd, where loosened self-definition shows up in money behaviour within the same season. Natal Ketu in the 12th or 9th sits easiest; in the 10th, 1st or 2nd it costs the most. Vimshottari is one timing lens among several.
Aquarius ascendant
Saturn rules the 1st and 12th houses from Aquarius lagna, so the self and the exit share a lord and Ketu's subtraction reinforces an existing bias rather than fighting it: detachment arrives squared, and drift rather than disaster is the characteristic risk. Money is the exposed flank, since Jupiter holds both the 2nd and 11th, which puts the income pipeline through one channel during Ketu-Jupiter. Ketu-Venus, the yogakaraka stretch carrying the 4th and 9th, is usually the most constructive part of the seven years, working on foundations and belief rather than the office. Structure is the classical counterweight for the whole window, and natal Ketu's house and dispositor still set the content.
Pisces ascendant
Pisces is the one ascendant where the node's pull and the lagna lord's grain run the same direction, toward the interior, and classical sources treat Ketu as at ease in the moksha register Pisces embodies. The catch is structural: Jupiter rules the 1st and 10th together, so whatever loosens the self also tugs at the profession, making Ketu-Jupiter the hinge sub-period of the seven years. Saturn holds the 11th and 12th, gains sharing a lord with retreat, so losses often convert to quiet rather than crisis. Comfortable natal seats are the 1st, 12th and 8th; the costly ones are the 10th, 7th and 5th. The affinity is a classical reading rather than a measured result.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the Ketu Mahadasha and where does it fall in the Vimshottari sequence?
The Ketu Mahadasha runs 7 years. It is the second mahadasha in the Vimshottari sequence, opening after the 6-year Sun Mahadasha and closing before the 20-year Venus Mahadasha. The full Vimshottari order is Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17, totalling 120 years. Which mahadasha opens at birth is determined by the natal Moon nakshatra and the proportion of that nakshatra already traversed at the moment of birth.
What does Ketu signify as a karaka and why does the 7-year period read as it does?
Ketu is the south lunar node, classically depicted as the headless body of the asura whose head became Rahu. Ketu signifies separation, detachment, the residual sediment of prior-life karma, moksha (spiritual liberation) and the sudden cut that ends a phase. The 7-year period therefore reads as a separation-and-internalisation window: the native tends to withdraw from external markers of identity, end relationships and careers that no longer carry karmic charge and turn inward toward whatever the chart signals as the soul's actual orientation. The texture varies widely by natal placement but the underlying signature is consistent.
How does Ketu's natal house shape the 7-year reading?
Ketu's natal house tells the reader which life area carries the separation reading most strongly. Ketu in the 1st house reads as identity dissolution and reset; Ketu in the 4th as home and family detachment; Ketu in the 7th as relationship endings and recalibration; Ketu in the 10th as career exit or reorientation; Ketu in the 9th or 12th as accelerated spiritual orientation. The house gives the surface; Ketu's dispositor (the planet ruling Ketu's sign) gives the underlying mechanism.
What is Ketu's dispositor and why does it matter?
Ketu has no rulership over any zodiac sign in classical Vedic astrology. The planet whose sign Ketu occupies is called Ketu's dispositor. Reading the dispositor's house, sign, dignity and aspects gives the underlying mechanism of the 7-year period. Ketu in Cancer takes its texture from the Moon's placement; Ketu in Sagittarius takes it from Jupiter; Ketu in Capricorn takes it from Saturn. The mahadasha reading therefore runs through the dispositor analysis, not through Ketu in isolation.
How do the 8 antardasha sub-periods inside the Ketu Mahadasha work?
The 7-year Ketu Mahadasha divides into 8 antardasha sub-periods running in the fixed Vimshottari order after the opening Ketu-Ketu antardasha: Ketu-Venus (1 year 2 months), Ketu-Sun (about 4 months 6 days), Ketu-Moon (7 months), Ketu-Mars (about 4 months 27 days), Ketu-Rahu (1 year 0 months 18 days), Ketu-Jupiter (about 11 months 6 days), Ketu-Saturn (1 year 1 month 9 days) and Ketu-Mercury (about 11 months 27 days). Each sub-period carries its own texture set by the antardasha lord's natal placement. Tempora has separate method articles on each sub-period.
What does the Tempora framework not predict about the Ketu Mahadasha?
The framework identifies a 7-year structural-pressure window with a separation-and-internalisation signature. It does not predict whether a specific native will experience the period as loss or as liberation. It does not predict outcome direction. It does not predict timing finer than the antardasha sub-period band without the transit and pratyantara overlay. The classical readings carry historical and conventional weight, but the framework treats them as structural-pressure flags to cross-check against transit data, not as deterministic forecasts.
