Mars retrograde 2027: station dates, the Cancer pass and your Moon sign
Mars is the fastest of the planets that retrograde for weeks at a time, and it does so only once in about 26 months. The 2027 loop runs from 10 January to 1 April, starts in Leo and ends in Cancer, the sign where classical teaching considers Mars weakest. This page carries every Mars sign change from 2026 to 2028, the station degrees, the Cancer windows and a twelve-row table that places the loop against each Moon sign.
What a Mars retrograde is, mechanically
No planet ever moves backwards. Retrograde motion is a line-of-sight effect. The Earth orbits the Sun in a year; Mars takes about 687 days. Roughly every 26 months the faster Earth catches Mars up and passes it on the inside, and for the weeks around that overtaking Mars appears, against the background stars, to slow, stop, drift westward and then stop and resume. It is the same illusion as a slower car seeming to slide backwards when you pass it on a motorway. The two moments when the apparent motion is zero are the stations, and the stretch between them is the retrograde loop.
Because the overtaking happens when Earth sits between Mars and the Sun, a retrograde Mars is always close to opposition: on the far side of the sky from the Sun, rising at sunset, brightest and closest of its two-year cycle. That geometry has a consequence that the classical texts also encode. A planet is called combust when it sits within a stated arc of the Sun and is lost in the glare; for Mars the traditional orb is 17 degrees. A retrograde Mars is roughly 180 degrees from the Sun, so it can never be combust while retrograde. The two conditions are mutually exclusive, which is why the combustion window below falls in 2028 and the retrograde in 2027.
The size of the loop varies. Mars's orbit is noticeably elliptical, so an opposition near its perihelion in late summer produces a short, fast loop and an opposition near aphelion produces a longer, slower one. The 2027 loop is on the longer side: 81 days and 19.5 degrees of arc, with the stations in sidereal Leo and Cancer. The general mechanism of reading any transit against a chart is set out on the transit reading page; this page applies it to Mars specifically.
The 2027 stations and the loop
These are the station times from the engine, found by scanning the daily positions for the moment Mars's speed changes sign and then narrowing to the minute. Station times do not depend on the ayanamsa or on the choice of zodiac; a station is a property of the motion, so these two dates are the same on every site. What differs is the degree label attached to each.
| Event | Date and time (IST) | Position (sidereal, True Pushya Paksha) |
|---|---|---|
| Mars first reaches the loop's low point (pre-shadow) | 5 November 2026, 20:47 | 27.82 Cancer, moving direct |
| Mars stations retrograde | 10 January 2027, 18:30 | 17.33 Leo, Purva Phalguni |
| Mars retrogrades from Leo into Cancer | 14 March 2027, 07:59 | 0.00 Leo to 29.99 Cancer |
| Mars stations direct | 1 April 2027, 19:39 | 27.82 Cancer, Ashlesha |
| Mars re-enters Leo moving direct | 21 April 2027, 12:58 | 0.00 Leo |
| Mars passes the loop's high point again (post-shadow) | 8 June 2027, 07:44 | 17.33 Leo |
Read as one arc: Mars covers 27.82 Cancer to 17.33 Leo three times. Once moving direct from 5 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, once backwards from 10 January to 1 April 2027 and once forwards again from 1 April to 8 June 2027. The whole stretch of 19.5 degrees is under triple coverage for about seven months. Some practitioners read the outer dates, the pre-shadow and post-shadow passes, as part of the retrograde; the classical texts work only with the stations and the sign boundaries. Both sets of dates are given so the reader can apply either convention.
In the tropical zodiac that Western sites use, the same stations fall at about 10.4 degrees of Virgo and about 20.9 degrees of Leo, because the ayanamsa in 2027 is 23.10 degrees under True Pushya Paksha. Readers comparing this page with a Western listing should expect the same station dates and different sign names.
Every Mars sign change, 2026 to 2028
Twenty-three sign changes fall in the three years. Each was found by a daily scan of the engine's sidereal Mars longitude for a change of sign, then narrowed to the minute and converted from Universal Time to IST by adding five hours thirty minutes. Where a crossing falls between midnight and 05:30 IST the UTC listing will show the previous calendar day; those rows are marked.

| 12 October 2028 | 12:10 | Cancer | Leo | Direct | |
| 6 December 2028 | 13:21 | Leo | Virgo | Direct |
Two features stand out. First, the only sign Mars enters twice in 2026 and 2027 is Cancer, and the only sign it leaves twice is Leo, because the loop straddles their boundary. Second, Mars spends more than nine months in the Cancer and Leo pair, from 16 September 2026 to 3 July 2027, against a typical six to seven weeks per sign when moving direct. Anyone whose chart has Cancer or Leo on a sensitive house gets an unusually long Mars season.
The Cancer pass: Mars in its debilitation sign
Classical teaching assigns each planet a sign of exaltation and a sign of debilitation, the places where its nature is most and least at home. For Mars the exaltation sign is Capricorn and the debilitation sign is Cancer, with the deepest point at 28 degrees Cancer. The 2027 direct station at 27.82 Cancer therefore lands within a fifth of a degree of that classical deep point, which is the detail most likely to be remarked on in commentary about this loop.
| Mars in Cancer | Enters (IST) | Leaves (IST) | Days | Motion |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First pass | 16 September 2026, 19:45 | 10 November 2026, 09:50 | 54 | Direct throughout |
| Retrograde return | 14 March 2027, 07:59 | 21 April 2027, 12:58 | 38 | Retrograde to 1 April, then direct |
| Next pass | 25 August 2028, 01:51 | 12 October 2028, 12:10 | 48 | Direct throughout |
Stripped of the ominous vocabulary, the mechanics of a debilitated Mars are a temperament mismatch. Mars is the register of direct action, heat, competition and the cut that settles a matter. Cancer is the register of protection, memory, home and the slow tides of feeling. The conventional reading of Mars in Cancer is that effort gets routed through emotion, that anger comes out sideways as resentment or withdrawal, that domestic and property matters draw more fire than they usually do and that the person acting is less sure of the ground under them. It is a friction reading. The texts also give explicit cancellation conditions, including a strong Moon or a well-placed Jupiter, that individual charts can meet, and a transit through a sign is in any case much lighter than a natal placement in it.
The retrograde return of 14 March to 21 April 2027 adds the second layer. The classical view of a retrograde pass is that the planet revisits ground already covered, so matters that opened during the first Cancer pass of September to November 2026 and seemed settled come back for a second hearing. Some lineages treat a retrograde planet as stronger because it is at its brightest and closest to Earth; others treat it as erratic. Both agree it is slower, and in a sign of debilitation the slowness compounds the friction. The eighteen days from 14 March to 1 April, retrograde and debilitated together, are the dense core of the whole loop.
For readers using Lahiri, the engine places these same Cancer boundaries on different days, because the Lahiri ayanamsa in 2027 is 24.24 degrees against 23.10 for True Pushya Paksha. Under Lahiri, Mars enters Cancer on 15 October 2026, leaves on 12 November 2026, retrogrades back in on 10 March 2027 and leaves again on 26 April 2027. The station dates are identical; the loop simply sits a degree further back in each sign.
Why these dates differ from tropical and Lahiri listings
Three sets of Mars dates circulate online and they disagree for two separate reasons. Western pages use the tropical zodiac, anchored to the March equinox, which has drifted about 23 degrees from the star-anchored sidereal zodiac over two thousand years. So a tropical listing has the 2027 retrograde running from Virgo back into Leo. Sidereal listings agree with this page on the sign names; among them, the difference is the ayanamsa, the correction that fixes where the sidereal zodiac begins. Most Indian almanacs and most software use Lahiri. Tempora uses True Pushya Paksha, which anchors the zodiac to the centre of the Pushya nakshatra, the lunar mansion in Cancer, and in 2027 the two anchors sit 1.13 degrees apart by this engine's measurement.
Mars moves about 0.5 to 0.8 degrees a day when travelling direct, so a 1.13 degree offset shifts a sign change by roughly two days. Near a station the motion slows to a crawl and the same offset can move a boundary by a week or more, as the Cancer dates above show. Neither anchor is wrong; they are different commitments about where the zodiac starts. The full argument is on the Saturn transit page, which explains the mechanism once for every dated page in this corpus, and the ayanamsa comparison covers the anchor choice itself. The honest limitation runs both ways: no backtest yet separates the two anchors cleanly on outcomes.
Combustion: none in 2027
Combustion, the condition of a planet sitting inside the Sun's glare, is the other weakening condition readers ask about, and for Mars it does not arise in this window. The orb this page uses is the classical 17 degrees of angular separation from the Sun, either side, measured on the engine's sidereal longitudes. Scanning every day from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2028 at that orb gives a single window: Mars is combust from 4 January 2028 at 18:16 IST, at 7 degrees Capricorn, to 5 June 2028 at 20:19 IST, at 5 degrees Taurus, with the exact conjunction on 21 March 2028 at 08:06 IST at 7.89 degrees Pisces. That is a 153 day stretch, long because Mars and the Sun move at similar speeds when Mars is on the far side of its orbit.
The combustion window is independent of the ayanamsa: it is an angle between two bodies, so it comes out the same under Lahiri, under True Pushya Paksha and in the tropical zodiac. Only the sign label of the conjunction moves. Readers who see a different orb quoted, 15 degrees or 12 degrees are also used, should expect a window a few days shorter at each end; the exact conjunction date does not move.
The retrograde loop by Moon sign
The sign Mars occupies is the same for everyone. What differs is which house that sign falls in your chart, and the Moon sign count is the one most Indian readers reach for first because it needs only a birth date and a rough time. The loop occupies two signs, Leo for the first 63 days and Cancer for the last 18, with a further 20 days of direct motion in Cancer before Mars returns to Leo. The table gives both houses for every Moon sign and the conventional themes of each house, so the reader can see which two areas of life get the slow second pass.
| Moon sign | House of Leo (retrograde 10 Jan to 14 Mar 2027) | House of Cancer (14 Mar to 21 Apr 2027, direct from 1 Apr) | Conventional themes under the second pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 5 | 4 | children, study, speculation; then home, mother, property |
| Taurus | 4 | 3 | home, mother, property; then effort, siblings, short moves |
| Gemini | 3 | 2 | effort, siblings, short moves; then money, speech, family |
| Cancer | 2 | 1 | money, speech, family; then self, body, initiative |
| Leo | 1 | 12 | self, body, initiative; then expense, rest, distance |
| Virgo | 12 | 11 | expense, rest, distance; then gains, friends, elder sibling |
| Libra | 11 | 10 | gains, friends, elder sibling; then career, authority |
| Scorpio | 10 | 9 | career, authority; then father, teachers, long travel |
| Sagittarius | 9 | 8 | father, teachers, long travel; then shared money, upheaval, research |
| Capricorn | 8 | 7 | shared money, upheaval, research; then partner, contracts |
| Aquarius | 7 | 6 | partner, contracts; then work, health, disputes |
| Pisces | 6 | 5 | work, health, disputes; then children, study, speculation |
One classical rule bears on this table directly. Transit teaching counted from the Moon marks Mars as favourable in the 3rd, 6th and 11th houses and as a strain elsewhere. So three Moon signs have a favourable Leo segment: Gemini (Leo in the 3rd), Libra (Leo in the 11th) and Pisces (Leo in the 6th). Three have a favourable Cancer segment: Taurus (Cancer in the 3rd), Virgo (Cancer in the 11th) and Aquarius (Cancer in the 6th). The Leo Moon carries the loop across its 1st and 12th houses and the Cancer Moon across its 2nd and 1st, which is the pairing the tradition reads as most personal. These are conventional registers, not predictions, and the ascendant count below usually overrides them for concrete events.
Reading it from the ascendant and from the Moon, with the limits
From the ascendant. The house that Leo and Cancer occupy counted from your rising sign names the concrete life areas under the loop. A Capricorn ascendant has Leo in the 8th and Cancer in the 7th, so the retrograde runs across partnerships and shared resources; a Taurus ascendant has Leo in the 4th and Cancer in the 3rd, home and effort. The 2027 by ascendant series rotates the year's slower transits through all twelve rising signs and is the natural companion to this table. Mars also aspects the 4th, 7th and 8th signs from wherever it sits, a geometry set out in Mars's special aspects, so a single Mars placement touches four houses at once.
From the Moon. The Moon count describes the emotional and mental register of the same weeks: where the restlessness goes, what gets argued about at home. The table above gives it. Windows flagged by both counts, where the ascendant and the Moon put the loop on the same sensitive house, are conventionally read as heavier.
The filter that decides how much any of it matters. A transit is the surface layer of timing. Underneath it runs the dasha, the planetary period sequence, and a Mars retrograde lands very differently on someone in a Mars period than on someone in a Venus period. The Mars period page covers the seven year Mars period and when it coincides with a Mars transit the two reinforce. The second filter is strength by sign: Mars's Ashtakavarga, the classical point system that scores each sign for Mars from zero to eight, tells you whether Leo and Cancer are strong or weak signs for Mars in your particular chart, and a transit through a sign holding five or more points is read as productive even in debilitation. Third, a natal Mars in Leo or Cancer gets its return or its deepest debilitation point crossed three times, which is a sharper event than the general sign pass.
The limits are real. A transit of Mars through one sign is a few weeks of weather on a chart whose structure was fixed at birth. The classical registers above are conventional readings, not measured effects, and no study Tempora has run separates a Mars retrograde cohort from the base rate on any outcome. Treat the dates as exact and the readings as hypotheses to check against your own history during the earlier Cancer pass of September to November 2026.
Where this sits in the 2027 sky
The Mars loop is the first of three slow-planet events that shape the year. Mars stations direct on 1 April 2027; Saturn enters Aries, its own debilitation sign, on 23 May 2027, dated and read on the Saturn transit 2027 page; Jupiter leaves Cancer, its exaltation sign, on 19 June 2027, covered on the Jupiter transit 2027 page. So the spring of 2027 has Mars debilitated in Cancer while Jupiter is still exalted there, and Mars leaves Cancer on 21 April, two months before Jupiter does. On the mundane side, Tempora's Iran tension window reads the spring of 2027 on the 1979 chart with a written test condition; Mars's retrograde station in Leo and the direct station in Cancer are part of the sky that page works from, and that page, not this one, carries the falsifiable claim.
For the transit method itself, the transit reading page explains the ascendant and Moon counts and the classical aspects, and the Saturn transit hub is the model this page follows. If you want to know which houses Leo and Cancer are in your own chart, Kaal Imprint draws the chart for free from your date, time and place of birth and places the current sky against it.
Frequently asked
When is Mars retrograde in 2027?
Under the True Pushya Paksha ayanamsa, computed with Swiss Ephemeris, Mars stations retrograde on 10 January 2027 at about 17 degrees of sidereal Leo and stations direct on 1 April 2027 at about 28 degrees of sidereal Cancer. The loop lasts 81 days and covers 19.5 degrees. Dates are given for Indian Standard Time; the 10 January station falls in the evening IST, so UTC listings show the same day.
When does Mars enter Cancer in 2027?
Twice in this cycle. Mars entered Cancer moving direct on 16 September 2026 and left for Leo on 10 November 2026. The retrograde carries it back into Cancer on 14 March 2027, where it turns direct on 1 April 2027 and leaves for Leo again on 21 April 2027. Cancer is the sign of Mars's debilitation, so that second pass of 38 days is the one most readers ask about.
Why do these Mars dates differ from other websites?
Two reasons. Western sites use the tropical zodiac, which sits about 24 degrees ahead of the sidereal one, so their Mars retrograde runs in tropical Virgo and Leo. Most Vedic sites use the Lahiri ayanamsa, which differs from the True Pushya Paksha anchor used here by roughly a tenth of a degree. Mars covers that in a few hours when moving fast and in days near a station, so sign-change dates can differ by a day either side and station degrees by a fraction.
Is Mars combust in 2027?
No. Using the classical 17 degree orb from the Sun, Mars is never within that distance of the Sun during 2026 or 2027. The next combustion begins on 4 January 2028 and runs to 5 June 2028, with the exact conjunction on 21 March 2028 in sidereal Pisces. Mars retrogrades when it is opposite the Sun, so a retrograde Mars is by definition far from combust.
What does Mars retrograde mean for my Moon sign?
The loop runs from 17 degrees Leo back to 28 degrees Cancer, so it occupies two houses counted from your Moon sign. For a Leo Moon that is the 1st and 12th houses; for a Capricorn Moon the 8th and 7th; for an Aries Moon the 5th and 4th. The table on this page gives all twelve. The classical reading is that the themes of those houses get a second, slower pass, and the house count from your ascendant usually matters more for concrete events.
How do I find which house Mars is transiting in my own chart?
You need your ascendant sign and your Moon sign, which come from your date, time and place of birth. Count from the ascendant to Leo and Cancer for the event-level reading and from the Moon for the mood-level reading. Kaal Imprint draws your chart for free from your birth details, on the same Swiss Ephemeris and True Pushya Paksha calculation this page uses, and shows where Mars sits against it.

This page presents conventional Vedic transit teaching applied to the 2027 Mars retrograde and the Mars sign changes of 2026 to 2028, computed sidereally with the True Pushya Paksha ayanamsa via Swiss Ephemeris and dated in Indian Standard Time. Sign-change dates depend on the ayanamsa convention and differ from Lahiri and tropical listings by design; station and combustion dates do not. Structural windows are context, not guarantees, and individual charts vary in ways a sign-level page cannot capture. This page does not constitute financial, medical, legal or personal advice.
