Mercury casts a single aspect, the full 7th, and it works by analysis. It sharpens and verbalises the planet it aspects, drawing its significations into thought, speech and calculation. This is the analytical drishti, read planet by planet, with two hard astronomical limits built in.
The aspect framework for Mercury
Every planet aspects the 7th sign from where it sits. Mars, Jupiter and Saturn add special aspects; Mercury does not. It casts the 7th aspect alone, a full opposition from its sign. Like the Sun and Venus, Mercury is bound by elongation: it never wanders far from the Sun, which fixes a hard limit on which planets it can ever oppose.
What Mercury does to a planet it aspects
Mercury is the karaka of intellect, speech, analysis, commerce, dexterity and the nervous system, the adaptable messenger that takes on the colour of whatever it associates with. When it aspects a planet, it draws that planet's significations into thought and language: they get analysed, articulated, negotiated and made clever. A planet under a Mercury aspect is reasoned about and communicated. Mercury aspecting Mars is the sharp-tongued, tactical combination: intellect charged with drive. It supports debating skill, strategic thinking, technical and mechanical aptitude and incisive speech. It can also read as argumentativeness, cutting words, and a mind that attacks. Mars gains articulation and cunning under the Mercury aspect.
Mercury aspect on Jupiter
Mercury aspecting Jupiter joins detail to wisdom, analysis to breadth, the classic scholar-and-teacher combination. It supports learning, writing, teaching and a mind that is both precise and expansive. The tension is between Mercury's cleverness and Jupiter's wisdom: at its best a broad, well-articulated intelligence, at its weakest cleverness mistaken for depth.
Mercury aspect on Saturn
Mercury aspecting Saturn disciplines and structures the intellect. It supports rigorous, methodical, patient thinking, the mind suited to systems, research, law and long-form work. Why Mercury cannot aspect the Sun or Venus
Two hard computational limits shape the Mercury aspect. Mercury never appears more than about 28 degrees from the Sun in the sky, so the Sun can never sit roughly six signs, 180 degrees, from Mercury: a Mercury aspect on the Sun is impossible. Mercury and Venus, both inner planets, never separate by more than about 76 degrees, under three signs, so they can never be six signs apart: a Mercury aspect on Venus is impossible, and by the same logic Venus can never aspect Mercury. Any reading that claims a Mercury 7th aspect on the Sun or on Venus by whole-sign drishti has made an error. These bodies relate through conjunction and combustion, never through the 7th aspect.
What the Mercury aspect does not predict
The Mercury aspect is an intellectual colouring, not an event. It says the aspected planet is analysed and verbalised, with a risk of over-thinking. It does not predict specific outcomes and does not by itself make a chart clever or scattered. A Mercury aspect on a dignified planet reads differently from the same aspect on a weak or combust one.
