Rahu in the 12 houses: what each placement means and when the nodes activate it

Rahu is the Moon's north node, a calculated point where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. Its house in a birth chart is read as the area of life where a person reaches furthest toward the new and the unfamiliar. This page gives the classical reading for all twelve houses in plain English, then dates when the moving nodes reach each house for every ascendant from 2025 to 2030.

The dates, in one place. On the mean node, computed with Swiss Ephemeris and the True Pushya Paksha ayanamsa, Rahu entered Aquarius on 9 June 2025, enters Capricorn on 27 December 2026, Sagittarius on 15 July 2028 and Scorpio on 1 February 2030 (all IST), with Ketu six signs away at every step. The house readings are classical, drawn from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika. Tempora has not tested them against outcome data and this page carries no forward call; dated calls live on the Tracker.

How to read Rahu by house

Rahu and Ketu are the two lunar nodes, the points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. They are calculated points with no mass, and they always sit 180 degrees apart. Houses on this page are whole sign houses counted from the ascendant (the sign rising at birth), so the sign holding Rahu is one house and the sign opposite, holding Ketu, is the seventh house from it.

The classical texts read Rahu's house as the area where the person wants more than the family or culture expected, often through foreign, new or unconventional routes. Ketu's house is read as the area where the person tends to withdraw or feel already finished. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) and Mantreshwara's Phaladeepika treat Rahu kindly in the upachaya houses, the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th, which are expected to improve with age and effort. They treat it with caution in the dusthana houses, the 6th, 8th and 12th, which carry illness, loss and upheaval. The 6th belongs to both groups.

Three things change the reading. First, the sign Rahu sits in and the planet that rules that sign, called its dispositor; Rahu has no sign of its own and acts through that ruler. Second, the condition of the house lord and of any planet sharing the sign. Third, timing: the 18 year Rahu mahadasha (a major period in the Vimshottari dasha, one of several dasha systems) and transits of the nodes and slow planets. A birth time error of an hour can move the ascendant by a sign, which moves Rahu by a house.

The node calendar, 2025 to 2030

The mean node moves backward through the zodiac at about 0.053 degrees a day without ever stopping, so it crosses each sign boundary once. Every span below lasts 566 days, about eighteen and a half months, and the full circuit takes about 18.6 years.

Method. Positions come from Swiss Ephemeris with the True Pushya Paksha ayanamsa (the correction that sets where the sidereal zodiac starts); Lahiri dates differ. The engine's Lahiri offset in 2027 is 1.13 degrees, which the mean node covers in about 21 days, so each Lahiri date in the right-hand column falls 21 days earlier. Rahu is the mean node, the steady average position. The true node wobbles around it and can cross a boundary days or weeks away from these dates, which is why listings that use the true node disagree again. Each crossing was located to the minute and is given here to the day in IST. The True Pushya Paksha vs Lahiri page sets out the anchor choice.

Which houses the nodes cross, by ascendant

Find your ascendant in the left column. Each cell gives the house transiting Rahu (R) and transiting Ketu (K) occupy for that span. For a Cancer ascendant, for example, Rahu crosses the 7th house and Ketu the 1st from 27 December 2026 to 15 July 2028. Classical practice also reads transits from the natal Moon; use your Moon sign in place of the ascendant for that count, or see the 2027 Moon-sign table.

Because the nodes move backward, each ascendant's Rahu house counts down by one at every change: 11th, then 10th, then 9th for an Aries ascendant. Ketu always sits six houses on. The first and last columns run past the 2025 to 2030 window because the spans straddle it.

Rahu returns, 2025 to 2030

A Rahu return is transiting Rahu coming back to the sign it held at birth, near ages 18 to 19, 37, 56 and 74 to 75. During a return the moving Rahu sits in the same house as the natal Rahu, so the house section below that matches your natal placement is the one in play. Ketu reaches the natal Rahu sign half way between returns, about nine years later.

The birth ranges are the same mean-node sign spans, run backward with the same engine. A birth within a few days of a range edge needs the exact birth time to settle which side it falls on.

Rahu in the 1st house: self and body

The 1st house (Tanu Bhava, the house of the body) covers appearance, health, temperament and the direction a life takes. With Rahu here the classical texts describe a restless, ambitious person with a hunger to stand out, prone to complaints of the head and to sudden changes of course. Ketu falls in the 7th, so the same chart tends to keep partners at some distance or meet them on unusual terms.

Read in plain terms, this is a person whose sense of self is built away from the family template. Practitioners commonly see it in people who move abroad, change field or reinvent their public image more than once. The risk side is an identity that feels assembled for effect, or chasing distinction without a settled base.

One rule makes this placement easy to check: Rahu in the 1st sits in the ascendant sign, so the ruler of the ascendant is also Rahu's dispositor. A strong ascendant lord (in its own sign, exalted or in an angle) is read as giving the ambition something solid to work through. A weak one is read as leaving it unanchored. This placement is also especially sensitive to birth time: an error of an hour can move Rahu out of the 1st altogether.

Dated activation. Transiting Rahu crosses the 1st house for Aquarius ascendants from 9 June 2025 to 27 December 2026, for Capricorn ascendants from 27 December 2026 to 15 July 2028 and for Sagittarius ascendants from 15 July 2028 to 1 February 2030. Transiting Ketu crosses the 1st for Leo, Cancer and Gemini ascendants over the same three spans. Classical practice reads these as periods when questions of identity, health and direction come forward. The 1st house reference covers the house itself.

Rahu in the 2nd house: money, family and speech

The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava, the house of wealth) covers savings, family of origin, food, speech and the face. The classical reading of Rahu here is earnings through unusual or foreign trade, speech that is sharp or hard to read and friction in the family over money. The 2nd is also one of the two maraka houses, which classical texts associate with health crises late in life, so they read affliction here with care. Ketu sits in the 8th.

Modern practitioners describe the placement through cross-border income, a family with roots in more than one region and people who switch easily between languages or accents. Money tends to arrive in uneven amounts. Inheritance can come through routes other than the expected line, such as a distant relative or a family business abroad.

The reading turns on the 2nd lord and on Jupiter, the planet classical texts tie to accumulated wealth. With both in good condition, the placement is read as wealth gained through channels the family did not know. With both weak, it is read as money that comes and goes and family arguments about it. The 8th house Ketu adds a tendency to treat joint money and other people's resources lightly.

Dated activation. Transiting Rahu crosses the 2nd house for Capricorn ascendants from 9 June 2025 to 27 December 2026, for Sagittarius ascendants from 27 December 2026 to 15 July 2028 and for Scorpio ascendants from 15 July 2028 to 1 February 2030. Ketu crosses the 2nd for Cancer, Gemini and Taurus ascendants over the same spans. Classical practice reads these spans as times of irregular income and family money questions. See the 2nd house reference.

Rahu in the 3rd house: effort, siblings and communication

The 3rd house (Sahaja Bhava, the house of younger siblings) covers courage, effort, skill with the hands, writing, short journeys and the people who share our work. It is an upachaya house, and the classical texts treat this placement kindly. Phaladeepika associates Rahu in the 3rd with courage and success against rivals, and BPHS reads Rahu in upachaya houses as giving gains that grow with age.

In plain terms the placement describes someone who takes initiatives others avoid and who works across boundaries of language, culture or field. Practitioners connect it with writing, media, publishing, sales and content work. Siblings often live in another place or follow unusual paths. Ketu in the 9th pulls the other way, toward a cooler relationship with inherited belief, teachers or the father's tradition.

Because the 3rd is an upachaya, the classical expectation is that results improve through the thirties and forties. Practitioners therefore often read the Rahu mahadasha for this placement as a productive period. The limit is the usual one: a weak dispositor or a heavy affliction to the 3rd lord can turn boldness into recklessness or quarrels with siblings.

Dated activation. Transiting Rahu crosses the 3rd house for Sagittarius ascendants from 9 June 2025 to 27 December 2026, for Scorpio ascendants from 27 December 2026 to 15 July 2028 and for Libra ascendants from 15 July 2028 to 1 February 2030. Ketu crosses the 3rd for Gemini, Taurus and Aries ascendants over the same spans. The growing houses page explains the upachaya rule.

Rahu in the 4th house: home, mother and property

The 4th house (Sukha Bhava, the house of comfort) covers home, the mother, land, vehicles, early schooling and inner ease. It is a kendra, one of the four angular houses, so planets here are prominent in the chart. The classical reading of Rahu in the 4th is an unsettled home life, distance from the mother or the birthplace and property gained or lost through unusual means. Ketu falls in the 10th, which can make public status feel less important than it does to others.

Practitioners today read the placement through relocation: living abroad, several moves in a decade, more than one residence at a time or a home that does not match the family's expectations. The mother is often described as having an unusual life herself, such as migration or a career uncommon for her generation. Property can be a real theme, including foreign property or work in real estate.

The Moon, the planet classical texts tie to the mother and to emotional steadiness, sets much of the tone, together with the 4th lord. A strong Moon is read as a person who can make a home anywhere. A weak or afflicted Moon is read as a lingering sense of not being settled, which this placement then amplifies.

Dated activation. Transiting Rahu crosses the 4th house for Scorpio ascendants from 9 June 2025 to 27 December 2026, for Libra ascendants from 27 December 2026 to 15 July 2028 and for Virgo ascendants from 15 July 2028 to 1 February 2030. Ketu crosses the 4th for Taurus, Aries and Pisces ascendants over the same spans. Classical practice reads these as periods when moves, property decisions and questions about the mother come forward. See the 4th house reference.

Rahu in the 5th house: children, intelligence and speculation

The 5th house (Putra Bhava, the house of children) covers children, intelligence, study, creative work, romance and speculation. It is a trikona, one of the three trine houses treated as fortunate. BPHS lists Rahu in the 5th among the causes of putra dosha, a difficulty or delay with children, mainly when the 5th lord is afflicted or Jupiter, the planet tied to children, is weak.

Modern practitioners read the delay clause more loosely: later parenthood, children through assisted conception or adoption, blended families or a strong bond with students in place of children. On the intellectual side the placement is linked with learning in fields that were new or unusual when the person entered them. Speculation is the other theme: gains and losses on trading or bets both tend to be large, so position size matters more here than elsewhere.

Ketu in the 11th is read as indifference to income and social circles, or a pull toward spiritual study. As always, the dispositor decides a great deal. Rahu in Aquarius, ruled by Saturn, is read as cooler and slower than Rahu in Leo, ruled by the Sun. None of this is medical guidance; questions about fertility belong with a doctor.

Dated activation. Transiting Rahu crosses the 5th house for Libra ascendants from 9 June 2025 to 27 December 2026, for Virgo ascendants from 27 December 2026 to 15 July 2028 and for Leo ascendants from 15 July 2028 to 1 February 2030. Ketu crosses the 5th for Aries, Pisces and Aquarius ascendants over the same spans. See the 5th house reference.

Rahu in the 6th house: rivals, debt and daily work

The 6th house (Shatru Bhava, the house of enemies) covers competition, disputes, debt, illness, service and daily work. It is the only house that is both an upachaya and a dusthana, and BPHS and Phaladeepika both read Rahu here favourably: the person defeats rivals, comes through litigation and grows through difficulty.

In current practice the placement is associated with competitive work, legal and regulatory fields, dispute resolution, service businesses and work that involves several jurisdictions. Health is described as prone to conditions that are slow to diagnose, with good recovery. Debt is read as something the person manages and clears more often than something that traps them.

Ketu in the 12th completes the picture: low attachment to comfort and spending, ease with solitude and an interest in retreat or spiritual practice. Classical texts read this Ketu position kindly as well, which is why the 6th to 12th axis is one of the more comfortable node placements in the tradition. The limit: a strongly afflicted 6th lord can still bring long disputes or chronic illness, and the favourable reading does not replace medical or legal advice.

Dated activation. Transiting Rahu crosses the 6th house for Virgo ascendants from 9 June 2025 to 27 December 2026, for Leo ascendants from 27 December 2026 to 15 July 2028 and for Cancer ascendants from 15 July 2028 to 1 February 2030. Ketu crosses the 6th for Pisces, Aquarius and Capricorn ascendants over the same spans. Classical practice reads a Rahu transit of the 6th as a good period for contests and workload. See the 6th house reference.

Rahu in the 7th house: marriage and partnership

The 7th house (Kalatra Bhava, the house of the spouse) covers marriage, business partners, contracts and how the public sees a person. It is a kendra. BPHS reads Rahu in the 7th with caution, linking it with marital disturbance and a partner whose conduct unsettles the household. Ketu falls on the 1st, which can make the person reserved or self-contained within a relationship.

Modern practice reads the placement mainly as a partner from outside the expected background: another country, religion, language or community. The relationship often starts through work abroad or online. Marriage timing is often described as either early or late, with the middle of the cultural range less common. Business partnerships follow the same pattern, with cross-border ventures and unusual pairings.

The placement alone is not read as a sign of divorce. Classical texts tie separation to additional affliction: a weak 7th lord, a weak Venus or Jupiter (the planets tied to marriage) or a heavy aspect from Saturn on the 7th. With those in good condition, the same placement is read as a durable relationship that crosses a boundary the family cared about. The dispositor changes the texture: an Aries ascendant puts Rahu in Libra, ruled by Venus, while a Cancer ascendant puts it in Capricorn, ruled by Saturn.

Dated activation. Transiting Rahu crosses the 7th house for Leo ascendants from 9 June 2025 to 27 December 2026, for Cancer ascendants from 27 December 2026 to 15 July 2028 and for Gemini ascendants from 15 July 2028 to 1 February 2030. Ketu crosses the 7th for Aquarius, Capricorn and Sagittarius ascendants over the same spans. See the 7th house reference.

Rahu in the 8th house: sudden change, inheritance and research

The 8th house (Randhra or Ayur Bhava, the house of longevity) covers sudden events, inheritance, joint money, hidden matters, research and long illness. It is a dusthana, and BPHS and Phaladeepika both treat Rahu here cautiously: unexpected reversals, uneven health and disputes over inheritance. Ketu falls in the 2nd, which can bring plain speech and some distance from family money.

Practitioners today give the placement a broader reading. It is linked with investigative and research work, forensic fields, insurance and other people's money, and an interest in subjects others avoid. Inheritance can be large but tends to arrive by unusual routes, such as a distant relative, a claim abroad or a contested settlement. Health is described as uneven, with acute episodes followed by recovery.

The 8th lord, the dispositor and any aspect from Jupiter decide how the intensity lands. With support, the reading is change that leads somewhere. Without it, the reading is change that arrives faster than the person can absorb. On its own this placement says nothing about lifespan; classical longevity calculation uses several houses and planets together, and no single node placement settles it.

Dated activation. Transiting Rahu crosses the 8th house for Cancer ascendants from 9 June 2025 to 27 December 2026, for Gemini ascendants from 27 December 2026 to 15 July 2028 and for Taurus ascendants from 15 July 2028 to 1 February 2030. Ketu crosses the 8th for Capricorn, Sagittarius and Scorpio ascendants over the same spans. See the difficult houses page for the dusthana group.

Rahu in the 9th house: belief, teachers and long travel

The 9th house (Dharma or Bhagya Bhava, the house of duty and fortune) covers religion and belief, the father, teachers, higher study, long journeys and luck. It is the main trikona. The classical reading of Rahu here is a departure from the family's religion or customs, tension with the father or with teachers and gains through foreign connections.

In current practice the placement is associated with study or research abroad, a personal belief system built from several traditions and scholarly or teaching work that crosses cultures. The father is often described as having an unusual biography himself, or as being distant for part of the person's life. Ketu in the 3rd adds a reluctance to push or self-promote, which can sit oddly beside the 9th house ambition.

Two planets carry much of the reading: the Sun (tied to the father) and Jupiter (tied to teachers and belief). Both in good condition is read as wide learning and support from mentors. Both weak is read as a long search for a set of principles that holds. As with every node placement, a reading from the house alone is the coarsest level; the dispositor and the 9th lord refine it.

Dated activation. Transiting Rahu crosses the 9th house for Gemini ascendants from 9 June 2025 to 27 December 2026, for Taurus ascendants from 27 December 2026 to 15 July 2028 and for Aries ascendants from 15 July 2028 to 1 February 2030. Ketu crosses the 9th for Sagittarius, Scorpio and Libra ascendants over the same spans. See the 9th house reference.

Rahu in the 10th house: career and public standing

The 10th house (Karma Bhava, the house of action) covers career, status, authority and public reputation. It is both a kendra and an upachaya, and the classical texts read Rahu here favourably: ambition, standing gained through association with powerful or foreign people and a career that keeps rising with age.

Practitioners link the placement with careers in technology, media, aviation, foreign trade, politics and large-scale promotion, often fields that were new when the person entered them. Visibility is high, which brings the matching risk: public reversals or scandal when the dispositor is weak or Rahu is closely joined by a malefic. Ketu in the 4th tends to leave the home and private life with less attention than the career receives.

Many practitioners place the defining career event of the life inside the Rahu mahadasha for this placement, with the sub-periods of Saturn and Mercury often cited for appointments and promotions. That is a convention to test against your own record. The 10th lord's condition matters as much as Rahu's.

Dated activation. Transiting Rahu crosses the 10th house for Taurus ascendants from 9 June 2025 to 27 December 2026, for Aries ascendants from 27 December 2026 to 15 July 2028 and for Pisces ascendants from 15 July 2028 to 1 February 2030. Ketu crosses the 10th for Scorpio, Libra and Virgo ascendants over the same spans. Classical practice reads a Rahu transit of the 10th as a period of career change and visibility. See the 10th house reference.

Rahu in the 11th house: gains and networks

The 11th house (Labha Bhava, the house of gains) covers income, profits, friends, networks, elder siblings and the fulfilment of long-held aims. It is an upachaya, and the classical texts count Rahu here among its favourable placements: gains from many sources including foreign ones, with goals reached through other people.

In modern terms practitioners connect the placement with income from platforms, networks, advertising, equity and foreign currency. They also link it with large professional circles that cross cultures. Friendships often form with people from very different backgrounds. An elder sibling is frequently described as having a foreign or unusual life. The dispositor shifts the source of gains: for a Leo ascendant the 11th is Gemini, ruled by Mercury, which is read as income through trade and communication, while for a Capricorn ascendant it is Scorpio, ruled by Mars, read as income won through competition.

Ketu in the 5th is the trade-off: detachment from creative recognition, a complicated or delayed path with children, or a pull toward spiritual study. The usual limits apply. Gains described by a chart are a classical tendency and carry no financial forecast, and a weak 11th lord or dispositor is read as income that is large but unsteady.

Dated activation. Transiting Rahu crosses the 11th house for Aries ascendants from 9 June 2025 to 27 December 2026, for Pisces ascendants from 27 December 2026 to 15 July 2028 and for Aquarius ascendants from 15 July 2028 to 1 February 2030. Ketu crosses the 11th for Libra, Virgo and Leo ascendants over the same spans. Classical practice reads a Rahu transit of the 11th as one of the better node transits for income. See the 11th house reference.

Rahu in the 12th house: expense, distance and retreat

The 12th house (Vyaya Bhava, the house of expense) covers spending, loss, foreign residence, sleep, hospitals, confinement, retreat and moksha, the spiritual idea of release. It is a dusthana. The classical reading of Rahu here is heavy or hidden expenses, residence far from the birthplace and hidden opponents.

Practitioners today treat the placement as one of the common chart markers for settling abroad. They also link it with work inside large institutions such as hospitals, prisons, foreign governments or retreat centres. The risk side is spending that leaks, escapist habits and trouble from people who do not show their hand. The spiritual side is a real interest in meditation, retreat or service.

Ketu in the 6th is read kindly in the classical texts and helps the person outlast rivals and illness. The dispositor carries more weight here than usual, because it decides whether the 12th shows up mainly as loss or mainly as distance and retreat. The 4th lord matters too: practitioners read a link between the 4th and 12th as a sign that the home itself moves abroad.

Dated activation. Transiting Rahu crosses the 12th house for Pisces ascendants from 9 June 2025 to 27 December 2026, for Aquarius ascendants from 27 December 2026 to 15 July 2028 and for Capricorn ascendants from 15 July 2028 to 1 February 2030. Ketu crosses the 12th for Virgo, Leo and Cancer ascendants over the same spans. See the 12th house reference.

What these readings do not tell you

The house readings above come from classical texts and from the way practitioners apply them today. They are descriptions of tendencies, and Tempora has not measured any of them against outcome data. Rahu in a given house is shared by about one in twelve people, so no single reading can describe all of them; the dispositor, the house lord, aspects, the navamsa (the ninth-part divisional chart) and the running dasha all change the picture. The dates on this page are exact for the mean node and the stated ayanamsa; what a transit brings stays open.

Frequently asked

What does Rahu in a house mean in a birth chart?

Rahu is the Moon's north node, a calculated point with no mass. Classical texts read the house it occupies as the area of life where the person reaches furthest toward the new, the foreign or the unconventional, and Ketu in the opposite house as the area where the person tends to hold back. The house sets the topic; the sign Rahu sits in, the planet that rules that sign and the running dasha decide how it plays out.

Which houses are considered good for Rahu?

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika read Rahu favourably in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses, the upachaya houses, which are expected to improve with age and effort. The 8th and 12th are read with the most caution. These are classical readings; Tempora has not calibrated any natal Rahu house placement against outcome data.

When does Rahu change sign next?

On the mean node, computed with Swiss Ephemeris and the True Pushya Paksha ayanamsa, Rahu enters Capricorn and Ketu enters Cancer on 27 December 2026 (IST). The following changes are 15 July 2028 (Rahu to Sagittarius, Ketu to Gemini) and 1 February 2030 (Rahu to Scorpio, Ketu to Taurus). Lahiri listings put each change 21 days earlier.

Why do Rahu transit dates differ between websites?

Two settings move them. The ayanamsa: most listings use Lahiri, which in 2027 sits 1.13 degrees from the True Pushya Paksha value this site uses, and the mean node needs about 21 days to cover that gap. The node type: this site uses the mean node, which moves backward at a steady pace, while the true node wobbles around it and can cross a sign boundary days or weeks away from the mean-node date.

What is a Rahu return?

A Rahu return is transiting Rahu coming back to the sign it held at birth, which happens about every 18.6 years, near ages 18 to 19, 37, 56 and 74 to 75. People born between 21 May 2008 and 9 December 2009, or between 15 October 1989 and 4 May 1991, meet a Rahu return between 27 December 2026 and 15 July 2028. Classical practice reads a return as a time when the themes of the natal Rahu house come forward.

Is Rahu in the 7th house bad for marriage?

Classical texts read it with caution, but the placement alone is not read as a sign of divorce. Its usual modern reading is a partner from outside the expected background, such as another country, religion or community. Marriage tends to come early or late. Classical texts tie separation to further affliction: a weak 7th lord, a weak Venus or Jupiter or a heavy Saturn aspect on the 7th house.

Does Rahu in the 12th house mean living abroad?

Practitioners treat it as one of the common chart markers for settling abroad, alongside links between the 4th and 12th houses. It is a tendency: many people with this placement never emigrate, and many emigrants do not have it. The dispositor and the 4th lord decide much of how the placement shows up.

How do I find which house Rahu occupies in my own chart?

The house depends on your ascendant, which changes sign about every two hours, so it needs an accurate birth time. Kaal Imprint draws your chart for free from your date, time and place of birth, on the same Swiss Ephemeris and True Pushya Paksha calculation this page uses, and shows the house Rahu occupies and the dasha period you are running.

This page presents classical Vedic readings of the lunar nodes by house, drawn from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika and restated in plain English, with node dates computed sidereally from Swiss Ephemeris on the mean node with the True Pushya Paksha ayanamsa. Dates differ from Lahiri and true-node listings by design. The readings describe tendencies, and individual charts vary in ways a house-level page cannot capture. This page does not constitute financial, medical, legal or personal advice.
