Ketu in Vedic Astrology: The Complete Guide to the South Node

Ketu is the south lunar node, the point where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic going south. Like its opposite it is a computed point rather than a body, which is why the tradition calls it a shadow planet, and why the rules written for the seven visible grahas need adapting before they apply. This page covers what Ketu signifies, how a body that lords no sign is actually read, the eighteen-month transit register, the seven-year mahadasha and the dated nodal calendar through 2028.

Ketu subtracts where Rahu adds. It has no sign of its own, so it brings no independent significations into a chart the way Shani or Guru do. It takes the significations of the sign it occupies, the house it falls in and the planets it contacts, then thins them: the capacity stays and the appetite for it goes. Every reading of Ketu therefore starts with the same three questions used for Rahu, which sign, which house and where the lord of that sign sits, and ends with a different one, what is being set down rather than picked up.

What Ketu signifies

The Moon's orbit is tilted by about five degrees to the plane of the Earth's orbit around the Sun. Two planes that are not parallel intersect in a line, and that line meets the zodiac at two opposite points. The southward crossing is Ketu. Nothing occupies the point. It is geometry, and the classical name chhaya graha, shadow planet, records exactly that.

Classical significations attached to Ketu include: dissolution, detachment, renunciation, isolation and the solitary, moksha and liberation, mantra and meditative practice, flags and banners, sharp instruments and surgery, precision without display, occult and diagnostic knowledge, sudden endings, things that fall away without being fought plus any domain where the operative mode is letting go of something already held.

The through-line in that list is subtraction rather than loss. Ketu marks where a chart already has the goods and has stopped finding them interesting. That is why the same placement appears in the classical texts as both the seat of spiritual capacity and the seat of indifference. Both descriptions follow from one mechanism: a faculty that operates without wanting anything from its own operation. The Ketu aspect on natal planets page works through this planet by planet, showing how the thinning register lands differently on Chandra than it does on Budha or Kuja, and Ketu aspect on the ascendant covers the case where the contact falls on the lagna itself.

The karmic residue framing is the traditional gloss on all of this. In the classical account Ketu marks what has already been completed, the competence carried in rather than acquired, while Rahu marks the unfamiliar direction. This is a framing, not a measurement. It gives readers a usable handle on why a Ketu-touched area often feels finished before it has been worked at, and it makes no claim that anyone can verify about anything prior to a birth. Tempora reports it as the tradition's interpretive language and computes only the positions. Ketu is classically grouped with the natural malefics alongside Kuja, Shani and Rahu, and as with Shani the word malefic names a method rather than an outcome: the body works by removing the settled state rather than by confirming it. Category alone decides nothing.

Ketu and rulership: reading a body that lords no sign

Here the nodes break the standard machinery. In the Parashari scheme every graha owns one or two signs, and the houses those signs occupy from the ascendant are what turn a generic planet into a chart-specific reading. Ketu owns nothing. There is no honest twelve-ascendant lordship table for it, and any table offering one has invented the rows.

What the tradition uses instead is a stack of three substitutes, applied in order.

The occupied sign. Ketu takes on the character of the sign it sits in, and the classical description is that it does so more completely than any true planet. The usual formulation is that Ketu behaves like the lord of the sign it occupies. A Ketu in a Surya sign runs the Surya register with the appetite removed; a Ketu in a Chandra sign does the same to the lunar register. This is the first and strongest substitute.

The dispositor. The lord of the occupied sign carries the reading forward. Ketu currently sits in Leo, so its dispositor is Surya, and the condition of Surya becomes the condition of Ketu's expression. Where the dispositor is strong and well placed, the tradition reads Ketu's narrowing as concentration into a single defined faculty; where the dispositor is weak or afflicted, the same narrowing is read as disengagement without a subject. The dispositor is a moving part rather than a fixed one, since the lord itself transits.

The house. Whichever house Ketu falls in from the ascendant supplies the life area. Because the two nodes are one axis, the Ketu house and the Rahu house are read together, and the twelve Rahu house-placement pages carry the opposite end of each pair, from the 1st through the 4th and the 10th.

Two further points where schools genuinely differ, stated as disputes rather than settled facts. Some later lineages assign Ketu a co-lordship of Scorpio alongside Kuja, and Rahu a co-lordship of Aquarius alongside Shani; the older Parashari material does neither, and Tempora does not compute with it. The argument for the Scorpio assignment is that Ketu's significations of dissolution and hidden knowledge match the sign, while the argument against is that a computed point with no body and no orbit of its own cannot own territory in a scheme built on ownership. Exaltation is similarly unsettled: Scorpio and Sagittarius are both defended for Ketu in the printed tradition, with Taurus and Gemini as the matching claims for Rahu. Where a source states one of these as fact without naming the alternative, the source is compressing a live disagreement.

Where Ketu falls for each ascendant right now

Since Ketu carries no fixed lordship, the useful twelve-ascendant table is the one computed from its actual position. As of 6 August 2026 Ketu sits at roughly 7 degrees of sidereal Leo, in Magha nakshatra, which is one of the three lunar mansions Ketu itself lords, with Rahu opposite at the same degree of Aquarius. Whole-sign counting from each lagna converts that one position into twelve different readings.

AscendantKetu (Leo)Rahu (Aquarius)Release register
Aries5th11thCreative output already carried, networks the reach
Taurus4th10thHome and inner base carried, public role the reach
Gemini3rd9thNear effort and voice carried, distance and belief the reach
Cancer2nd8thOwned resources carried, shared resources the reach
Leo1st7thKetu on the lagna, partnership the reach

Capricorn8th2ndHidden and shared assets carried, income and speech the reach
Aquarius7th1stPartnership carried, the body and self-presentation the reach
Pisces6th12thDaily work carried, the unseen the reach

Two caveats sit on that table. Whole-sign house counting is the convention here, and Placidus or Shripati cusps place a node near a house boundary differently. And on 27 December 2026 the whole column steps back one house at once, as Ketu moves to Cancer and Rahu to Capricorn, which is the subject of Rahu in Capricorn and Ketu in Cancer. A table like this describes where a body sits and says nothing on its own about dignity, aspect or the running dasha, which carry the actual reading.

Ketu transit

Ketu holds each sign for roughly eighteen months, and the axis completes a full circuit of the zodiac in about eighteen and a half years. That places nodal transit between the two-and-a-half-year Shani register and the roughly one-year Guru register in duration, long enough to define a chapter and short enough that most adults live through a dozen of them.

The structural fact that separates nodal transit from every planetary transit is direction. The nodes regress. Ketu enters Leo from Virgo, then Cancer, then Gemini, moving backwards through the zodiac continuously rather than looping the way Budha or Shani do. The cause is that the Moon's orbital plane itself precesses westward against the stars, so the two crossing points travel backwards with it. A retrograde planet is temporarily reversed and will resume; the nodes are structurally reversed and never resume. That difference is why the tradition reads the nodal sequence as unwinding rather than advancing, and it is worth stating plainly because a great deal of popular writing treats nodal retrogression as an alarming special condition when it is simply the ordinary state of the geometry.

One honest qualification on the dating. The mean node regresses smoothly, while the true node wobbles around that mean and can briefly edge forward. Tempora computes with mean node motion, which is why an ingress dated here may sit a few days from the same ingress dated by a true-node source. The full transit mechanics, with aspect maps and the sign-by-sign reading, are at Rahu and Ketu transit, and the year-specific treatment at Rahu and Ketu transit 2027.

On aspects the corpus follows the convention that the nodes cast the 5th and 9th aspects in addition to the 7th, mirroring Guru's special aspects. This is taught in many Parashari and Jaimini lineages, while the conservative teaching restricts the nodes to the 7th aspect only. The convention in use is stated wherever it is applied rather than assumed. General transit-reading mechanics, including the two counting registers from the lagna and from the natal Moon, are at the gochar hub.

Ketu as the point of release

This is the section that distinguishes the south node from everything else in the chart, and it is worth setting out carefully because the popular treatment usually reduces it to loss.

The classical description of a strong Ketu is skill without hunger. The faculty is present and often unusually refined, and the wish to be seen using it is absent. A Ketu-touched area of a chart tends to be described as one where the work comes easily and the reward for it fails to register. That is the same sentence read twice: high competence and low appetite are not two findings, they are one finding stated from two sides.

Which is why the placement is neither good nor bad on its own. Read as capacity, it is the tradition's marker for mastery that does not need an audience, and the classical association of Ketu with moksha, mantra and diagnostic precision follows from exactly that. Read as motivation, the same configuration describes a domain that struggles to hold attention because nothing in it feels unfinished. The Ketu mahadasha and spiritual awakening page works through the version of this that the tradition treats as the constructive form, and the standing limitation applies to both readings equally: the classical sources describe an inclination subject to dignity, aspect and the condition of the dispositor, and none of it is an established empirical effect.

Two practical consequences follow. First, a Ketu house is usually the wrong place to look for a chart's ambition, since ambition is a function of what is still wanted. Second, it is often the right place to look for what a chart can do without preparation. Both statements are about disposition rather than outcome, and neither predicts an event. Ketu also lords three nakshatras, Ashwini, Magha and Mula, which is a separate and frequently overlooked route by which the release register enters a chart: a natal Moon in any of the three opens the Vimshottari sequence in Ketu mahadasha regardless of where Ketu itself sits. Those three are covered at Ketu-ruled nakshatras.

Ketu mahadasha

Ketu mahadasha runs 7 years, the shortest period in the Vimshottari cycle, tied with Kuja and set against Shukra at 20 years at the other extreme. Seven years is short enough that the period usually reads as one movement rather than as a sequence of unrelated chapters, which is the opposite of the eighteen-year Rahu period, and it is also short enough that the sub-periods inside it move quickly.

Because Ketu owns no sign, the mahadasha inherits its content from the same three substitutes described above. The Ketu mahadasha hub carries the overview and links the twelve per-ascendant readings, which differ substantially: a Leo ascendant running Ketu with the node on the lagna reads differently from a Scorpio ascendant with it in the 10th, or a Pisces ascendant with it in the 6th, before dignity and aspects are considered at all.

Within the period the antardasha sequence opens with Ketu's own sub-period and proceeds through Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Kuja, Rahu, Guru, Shani and Budha. Several carry distinctive classical treatment. The Shukra sub-period is the longest inside the seven years and sets the renunciate register against the most worldly of the benefics. The Rahu sub-period is the axis running against itself, one end lording the period while the other lords the sub-period, and the tradition reads it as the point where release and appetite are both active. The Guru sub-period pairs dissolution with the expansive teacher, and the Shani sub-period pairs it with the slowest structural body. The Chandra sub-period is the one the classical material treats most cautiously, since the nodes are defined by the Moon's own orbit. Sub-period arithmetic for any mahadasha is at the antardasha calculator table, and the wider system, including the dashas that are not Vimshottari, at the mahadasha hub.

Rahu and Ketu: one axis, two ends

Read from the Ketu end, the axis looks like this. Ketu is the fixed point and Rahu is the direction of travel. Whatever house Ketu occupies is the one the chart is described as arriving with, and the opposite house is the one it is described as moving toward. The classical treatment gives the pair a single mechanism with two visible ends rather than two bodies that happen to oppose, and the separation of exactly 180 degrees is an identity rather than an aspect that tightens and loosens. The fact sheet records both nodes at 7.56 degrees on the same day, in Leo and Aquarius respectively, and that exact degree match holds on every other day too.

The practical consequence is that a reading of one node is structurally incomplete. Ketu in the 4th is also Rahu in the 10th, and a settled inner base is inseparable from an unfamiliar public role. This is why the Rahu complete guide and this page are built as one pair rather than as two separate entries, and why the house axis pages read naturally alongside both. The karmic vector framing, with Ketu marking what is already carried and Rahu marking what is being reached for, is worked through at the Rahu and Ketu axis and past-life karma.

One asymmetry is worth naming, since it is the reason the two ends are not interchangeable. Rahu's register grows by being fed and Ketu's shrinks by being fed, so the same attention applied at each end produces opposite results. Attention on the Rahu house is what the tradition treats as the chart's forward work. Attention on the Ketu house tends to confirm what is already known, which is useful when the goal is depth and unproductive when the goal is movement. Stated as disposition rather than instruction, that asymmetry is the whole of the axis reading.

The geometry also explains the eclipse connection from the Ketu side. An eclipse needs the Sun, Earth and Moon aligned in three dimensions, which is possible only when a new or full Moon happens near one of the two crossing points. Ketu is the descending crossing, so half of all eclipses occur at the Ketu end of the axis by definition rather than by analogy. The dated eclipse work in this corpus runs through the 2027 eclipses, the totality axis study, the eclipse and market behaviour work, the total solar eclipse crossing the United States and the eclipse axis in national charts. The standing limitation covers all of it: eclipse dating is precise, and the reading attached to an eclipse degree is a classical convention rather than an established empirical effect.

Ketu in the classical narrative tradition

The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra treats the nodes across its chapters on the grahas and on dasha, granting Ketu full mahadasha status in the Vimshottari scheme while giving it no sign lordship and no exaltation that the text itself settles. Phaladeepika, in its chapters on planetary effects and on dasha results, carries a fuller set of node-specific results. Both use the conditional grammar that runs through the classical literature: a placement is said to incline toward a result, subject to dignity, aspect and the condition of the lord.

It is worth stating honestly that the classical treatment of the nodes is thinner and more disputed than the treatment of the seven visible grahas, and thinner for Ketu than for Rahu. The nodes have no sign, so the whole apparatus of lordship, own-sign strength and mooltrikona is unavailable. Exaltation is contested. The aspect count differs between lineages. Several of the most confident-sounding modern rules about Ketu come from twentieth-century compilations rather than from the older texts, and those compilations do not always agree with one another. A guide presenting nodal rules with the same certainty as, say, Guru's exaltation in Cancer is overstating what the sources support.

The narrative material is correspondingly rich. Ketu is the body of the asura whose head was severed mid-swallow after it drank the amrita, the trunk surviving without the head, which is the mythic figure for a faculty that continues after the wanting has been cut away. Rahu is the head without the body. Read as literature the pair is precise, since a head without a body is appetite with no means and a body without a head is means with no appetite. Tempora treats these narratives as literary context rather than as operative mechanics. They give readers a handle on the register, and the register is what the computation actually carries.

Ketu remedies (a note)

The nodes attract more remedial literature than any other bodies in the tradition, and a large commercial apparatus has grown around that literature. Classical prescriptions for Ketu include specific mantra, ritual, charity, gemstone and dietary practices, each with its own regional variation, and the moksha-oriented practices are prescribed more often here than for any other graha.

Tempora describes what the tradition prescribes and does not sell or promise remedies. The computable mechanics of Ketu in a chart are the occupied sign, the dispositor, the house, the aspects and the running dasha, and those are stated openly. Ritual traditions carry genuine cultural and personal value, and they are documented here as ethnographic fact rather than as a causal claim. The reproducible-astrology methodology page sets out the computation-based reading stance in full.

The dated nodal calendar, 2025 to 2028

Everything above is structure. This section attaches the dates. Under True Pushya Paksha sidereal computation with mean node motion, the nodal calendar for the current cycle runs as follows. Because the two nodes are one axis and cross sign boundaries at the same instant, every row is a paired event, and showing the pairing is the honest way to present it.

DateKetuRahuWindow
9 June 2025Virgo to LeoPisces to AquariusHolds to 27 December 2026
27 December 2026Leo to CancerAquarius to CapricornHolds to 15 July 2028
15 July 2028Cancer to GeminiCapricorn to SagittariusRuns past the scanned window

Three reading layers hang off that calendar. The sign layer first: while Ketu holds Leo it sits in a Surya sign, so the condition and position of Surya carry the dispositor reading; from 27 December 2026 the dispositor changes outright, since Cancer is a Chandra sign, and that is a sharper handover than Rahu gets across the same boundary, where Aquarius and Capricorn are both Shani signs. A change of dispositor is the single most substantive thing a nodal ingress does to the reading, and Ketu gets one on 27 December 2026 while Rahu does not.

The house layer second. Whole-sign counting converts one calendar into twelve, as the table earlier in this page shows. On 27 December 2026 every one of those twelve readings steps back a house at once, which is the most consequential feature of a nodal ingress: it is not one chart's event, it is a simultaneous reassignment across all of them.

The interval layer third. The gaps between those three dates are close to eighteen and a half months each, which is the observable form of the roughly eighteen-and-a-half-year nodal circuit. Anyone dating a chapter off this calendar should treat the ingress dates as boundaries rather than as switches, since the fact sheet samples daily and a same-day crossing may be recorded on the following day.

The standing limitation applies throughout. These dates are sidereal under one ayanamsa computed with mean node motion, and other ayanamsas and true-node computations place the same ingresses a few days apart. Sign-level dating says where a body is. It says nothing about any individual chart's natal dignity, house context or running dasha, which carry the actual reading.

Frequently asked

What does Ketu mean in Vedic astrology?

Ketu is the south lunar node, the point where the Moon's orbital plane crosses the ecliptic going south. It is a computed geometric point rather than a physical body, which is why the tradition calls it a chhaya graha or shadow planet. Ketu is read as the register of dissolution, detachment, narrowing, inwardness and capability that is already carried, the place where a chart holds skill without appetite for it.

Does Ketu rule any zodiac sign?

Ketu lords no sign in the standard Parashari scheme, so it carries no house rulership from the ascendant. Three substitutes carry the reading instead: the sign Ketu occupies, the dispositor (the lord of that sign, wherever it sits) and the house Ketu falls in. Some later lineages assign Ketu a co-lordship of Scorpio alongside Kuja, while the older Parashari material does not, and exaltation is contested between Scorpio and Sagittarius. Tempora states the convention in use rather than asserting one as settled.

Why is Ketu always retrograde?

The lunar nodes regress because the Moon's orbital plane itself precesses westward against the stars, completing a circuit in about eighteen and a half years. Ketu's ingress order shows it directly: Virgo, then Leo, then Cancer, then Gemini. This is a structural fact about the geometry rather than an occasional loop, which is why nodal transit is read differently from a planetary retrograde. The mean node regresses smoothly, while the true node wobbles around that mean and can briefly edge forward, so true-node sources date the same crossing a few days apart.

How long is Ketu mahadasha?

Ketu mahadasha runs 7 years, the shortest period in the Vimshottari cycle, tied with Mars. Because Ketu lords no sign, the period is read through the sign Ketu occupies, its dispositor and its house, which is why the same 7 years reads differently across the twelve ascendants. The antardasha sequence opens with Ketu's own sub-period and proceeds through Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Kuja, Rahu, Guru, Shani and Budha.

What is the difference between Rahu and Ketu?

Rahu and Ketu are the two ends of one line and sit exactly 180 degrees apart at every moment. Rahu is the northward crossing and carries the register of appetite, amplification and reaching for the unfamiliar. Ketu is the southward crossing and carries the register of release, narrowing and competence already held. A reading of either node is structurally incomplete without the other, because Ketu in one house is always Rahu in the opposite house.

What are classical Ketu remedies?

Classical prescriptions include specific mantra, ritual, charity and dietary practices, and the nodes attract more remedial literature than any other bodies in the tradition. Tempora describes these as ethnographic prescriptions rather than as operative causal mechanisms. The computable mechanics of Ketu in a chart are the occupied sign, the dispositor, the house, the aspects and the running dasha. Ritual traditions carry their own cultural and personal value.

Where is Ketu right now and when does it next change sign?

Under True Pushya Paksha sidereal computation Ketu entered Leo on 9 June 2025 and sits at roughly 7 degrees of Leo in Magha nakshatra as of 6 August 2026, with Rahu opposite in Aquarius. Ketu enters Cancer on 27 December 2026, pairing with Rahu into Capricorn on the same date, then enters Gemini on 15 July 2028. Other ayanamsas place the same ingresses a few days earlier or later.

This page presents conventional Vedic teaching on the south lunar node applied to the 2025 to 2028 nodal calendar, computed sidereally with the True Pushya Paksha ayanamsa via Swiss Ephemeris using mean node motion. Structural windows are context, not guarantees; the release reading is a classical convention rather than an established empirical effect, and individual charts vary in ways a shared calendar cannot capture.
