Shukra (Venus) in Vedic Astrology: The Complete Relational Guide

Shukra is Sanskrit for Venus, the brightest planet in the sky and the karaka of marriage, beauty, art, comfort, vehicles, refinement and material ease. Venus is the one graha the classical tradition assigns directly to the spouse, which is why almost every marriage technique routes through it. This page covers what Shukra signifies mechanically, how its rulership works across the twelve ascendants, what Venus transits, retrogrades and mahadashas mean, and how Venus differs from the other benefic.

Venus is the kalatra karaka, the natural significator of the spouse. That makes it one of three layers a classical marriage reading uses, alongside the 7th house with its lord and the Navamsa division. Venus alone is a partial reading. Venus read together with the 7th house, the D9 and the running dasha is the complete one, and even then it describes structure rather than certainty.

What Shukra signifies

Shukra names the planet Venus, the brightest object in the night sky after the Moon. The Sanskrit root carries senses of brightness, clarity and the seminal essence, and the tradition builds Venus's significations outward from that image of luminous refinement.

Classical natural significations of Shukra include: marriage and the spouse, romance, sexual life, beauty, ornament, jewellery, perfume, music, dance, poetry, painting, vehicles, comfortable dwellings, luxury goods, sweetness of taste and of speech, diplomacy, negotiation, treaties, the reproductive system, kidneys and any domain where pleasure, proportion or relation is the operative mode. Venus also carries the classical association with the Daityas as their preceptor, which places it opposite Jupiter in the teacher-lineage narrative.

Venus is classified as a natural benefic alongside Jupiter, the waxing Moon and unafflicted Mercury. Benefic status describes the planet's method rather than its results: Venus operates through attraction, ease and accommodation. A well-placed Venus produces relational and material comfort signatures; a Venus under affliction can produce comfort that costs something, or attachment that resists a needed exit. Category alone does not decide outcome. Placement, dignity, house rulership and the running dasha do.

Venus is exalted in Pisces, where the tradition reads its capacity for devotion and dissolution of boundaries as amplified, and debilitated in Virgo, where the sign's analytic and corrective register works against Venus's preference for accepting things as they are. Neechabhanga conditions can cancel the debilitation, and the neecha bhanga raja yoga page sets out the specific cancellation rules the corpus follows.

Shukra's rulership across the twelve ascendants

Venus rules two signs in the classical Parashari scheme: Taurus (Vrishabha), the fixed earth sign, and Libra (Tula), the movable air sign. Which houses those two signs occupy depends on the ascendant, and that single fact decides what a Venus mahadasha and a Venus transit mean for a given chart.

AscendantHouses Venus rulesStructural signature

Taurus1st and 6thAscendant lord plus service dusthana
Gemini12th and 5thLoss plus creativity trine
Cancer11th and 4thGains plus home kendra
Leo10th and 3rdCareer kendra plus initiative
Virgo9th and 2ndFortune trine plus wealth, with debilitation in the lagna
Libra8th and 1stAscendant lord plus transformation dusthana

Aquarius4th and 9thYOGAKARAKA (home kendra plus fortune trine)

Venus is yogakaraka for Capricorn and Aquarius risings, meaning it owns both an angular house and a trine measured from the ascendant. For those two lagnas a Venus period carries the strongest structural mandate the chart holds, which is set out chart by chart at Venus mahadasha for Capricorn ascendant and Venus mahadasha for Aquarius ascendant. Taurus and Libra risings instead get Venus as ascendant lord, covered at Venus mahadasha for Taurus ascendant and Venus mahadasha for Libra ascendant. Ownership is one input. A yogakaraka Venus sitting debilitated in the 6th reads very differently from a yogakaraka Venus exalted in the 9th, and the ascendant table above says nothing about which of those a chart actually holds.

Venus's contribution to a chart's house-strength arithmetic is separately visible in its own bindu distribution, tabled at Venus ashtakavarga, and its aspect behaviour is set out at Venus aspect on natal planets. Venus casts the standard 7th-sign full aspect and adds no special aspects of its own.

Shukra transit

Venus completes a circuit of the zodiac in about a year, which works out to roughly a month in each sign when it is moving direct. That makes Venus a fast transit body: fast enough that a single sign passage is a matter of weeks rather than years, and fast enough that no individual Venus ingress carries the structural weight of a Saturn or Jupiter ingress.

What a Venus transit through a house does, in the classical reading, is warm that house's affairs for the duration. Venus through the 7th brings partnership matters forward; Venus through the 2nd touches family, speech and accumulated resources; Venus through the 10th makes career visible in a relational rather than an authority register. The effect is a tilt in emphasis rather than a change of structure. Structure comes from the mahadasha and from the slow movers, which is why the corpus reads Venus transits as texture on top of a slower frame rather than as a frame in themselves. The gochar hub sets out the two counting registers, from the ascendant for concrete life-area effects and from the natal Moon for emotional register.

Venus transits are also the reason a Venus period rarely feels uniform. Inside a twenty-year Venus mahadasha, Venus itself crosses every sign twenty times, so the transit layer supplies short rhythms while the dasha layer supplies the long one. Combining the two is the ordinary working method, and it is described at the mahadasha hub.

One standing limitation applies to every Venus transit claim: Venus never travels far from the Sun, reaching a maximum elongation of about 47 degrees, so a Venus transit is always within two signs of the solar position and Venus spends part of every year combust. Combustion changes how a transit reads and is not visible in a sign-level table at all.

Venus retrograde, and what it actually governs

Venus turns retrograde about every eighteen months and stays retrograde for roughly six weeks, which is the least frequent retrograde of any of the five true planets. The rarity is what gives Venus retrograde its interpretive weight in the tradition: it is uncommon enough that a given retrograde window falls in a distinguishable phase of a life rather than recurring several times a year.

Under Swiss Ephemeris computation the three windows in the current scan are these. Venus turns retrograde on 2 March 2025 in Pisces and turns direct on 13 April 2025, still in Pisces. It turns retrograde on 3 October 2026 in Libra and turns direct on 14 November 2026 in Virgo. It turns retrograde on 11 May 2028 in Taurus and turns direct on 23 June 2028, still in Taurus.

The middle window is the structurally interesting one, and it is the clearest illustration of what a retrograde actually does to a sign sequence. Venus stations retrograde in Libra, its own sign, then crosses the sign boundary backward into Virgo on 11 November 2026, stations direct in Virgo on 14 November 2026, and re-enters Libra moving forward on 17 November 2026. So Venus retreats out of its own sign into its debilitation sign for six days, turns around there and comes back. A sign-level calendar that lists only forward ingresses loses that six-day passage entirely, which is exactly the kind of detail the corpus computes rather than assumes.

The 2025 window sits inside Pisces from station to station, so Venus is retrograde in its exaltation sign for the whole six weeks with no boundary crossing at all. The 2028 window behaves the same way inside Taurus, and the retrograde is why Venus holds Taurus from 27 March 2028 to 31 July 2028, about four months in one sign instead of the usual one.

On meaning: the tradition reads a retrograde Venus as a Venus turned inward, reviewing rather than acquiring. Classical texts treat retrograde planets as having increased strength (cheshta bala) while behaving unconventionally, so the popular framing of Venus retrograde as a blanket prohibition on relationships or purchases finds no support in the classical rule set. What the retrograde reliably marks is a review interval in Venus-ruled affairs. Whether that interval produces anything depends on whether the chart has Venus sensitivity at all: natal Venus near the station degree, a running Venus mahadasha or antardasha, or Venus ruling a house the question concerns. A retrograde on a chart with no Venus contact sits inside ordinary variation.

Shukra mahadasha

Venus mahadasha runs 20 years, the longest of the nine planet-lord periods in the Vimshottari cycle. Twenty years is long enough that a Venus mahadasha typically spans a whole life chapter rather than an episode, and long enough that the sub-periods inside it carry most of the differentiating detail.

The antardasha sequence inside a Venus mahadasha begins with Venus itself for about 3 years 4 months, then runs Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury and Ketu in Vimshottari order. Venus-Rahu at about 3 years and Venus-Saturn at about 3 years 2 months are the longest sub-periods after Venus-Venus; Venus-Sun at about a year is the shortest. Each sub-period bends the Venus register toward the sub-lord's nature, so Venus mahadasha with Jupiter antardasha reads as relational affairs met with expansion and counsel, Venus mahadasha with Saturn antardasha as the same affairs met with delay and structural testing, and Venus mahadasha with Mercury antardasha as the analytic and transactional face of the same period. The full overview sits at Venus mahadasha.

The same twenty years read differently by ascendant, because Venus owns different house pairs from each lagna. Vimshottari is one dasha system among several the tradition uses, and a Venus period should be read alongside the transit picture rather than in place of it.

Venus and Jupiter: the two benefics, and how they differ

Venus and Jupiter are the two natural benefics of the classical scheme, and treating them as interchangeable is one of the most common reading errors. They differ in register, and the difference is consistent enough to be stated plainly.

Venus is the benefic of relation and material ease. Its domain is partnership, comfort, refinement, art, negotiation and the pleasant surface of a life. Jupiter is the benefic of expansion and meaning. Its domain is teaching, counsel, law, children, philosophy, faith and growth in scale. Venus makes a life comfortable; Jupiter makes it larger. Venus improves the quality of what exists; Jupiter increases the quantity and the significance. Where Venus is the karaka of the spouse, Jupiter is the karaka of children and of the teacher, and classical practice for a woman's chart weights Jupiter as a partner-significator alongside Venus, a convention this corpus states wherever it applies rather than assuming.

The two are also classical enemies in the Parashari friendship scheme, which surprises readers who expect two benefics to cooperate. The tradition reads the enmity through the Shukracharya and Brihaspati narrative, the preceptors of two opposed lineages. Mechanically it means a Venus-Jupiter conjunction is read as two benefics operating on uncomfortable terms rather than as a simple doubling of benefic effect, and that a Jupiter antardasha inside a Venus mahadasha carries a friction the house-lordship arithmetic alone would miss. The Jupiter mahadasha overview covers the Jupiter register in its own terms, and Jupiter-ruled nakshatras against Venus-ruled nakshatras shows how differently the two distribute across the lunar mansions.

Shukra in the classical narrative tradition

Beyond the mechanical framework, Shukra carries substantial weight in the classical literature. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, in its chapter on the characters of the grahas, describes Venus in terms of a charming body, a poetic disposition and a windy-phlegmatic constitution, and assigns it rulership over marital happiness, vehicles and ornament. The karaka chapters of the same text name Venus the kalatra karaka, the significator of the wife and by extension of the marital bond. Phaladeepika, in its opening chapters on planetary natures and significations, follows the same assignment and adds Venus's association with the south-east quarter, with the season of spring and with sweetness of taste.

The narrative layer runs alongside. Shukracharya appears in the epics as preceptor to the Asuras and holder of the Sanjivani vidya, the knowledge that restores life, and as the figure who loses an eye in the Vamana episode. The tradition reads that one-eyed image as the marker of a partial view, an intelligence devoted entirely to one side of a contest.

Tempora treats these narrative dimensions as literary context rather than as operative mechanics. The mechanics of Venus in a chart come from house rulership, dignity, aspects, divisional placement and sub-period lords. The narrative gives a reader a way to hold the mechanics. It is not the mechanics themselves, and a page that leans on the story where it owes a computation has substituted one for the other.

Venus and the marriage cluster

Because Venus is the kalatra karaka, the marriage techniques in this corpus route through it. The classical method reads marriage from three layers rather than one: the 7th house with its lord, the Navamsa or D9 division, and Venus as karaka. The marriage hub collects the cluster, the 7th house covers the house layer, and the Navamsa D9 chart covers the divisional layer that classical practice treats as the marriage varga.

The applied questions sit downstream of those three. Will my marriage last, read from the D9 and the D9 and 7th-house divorce reading work the durability question; why marriage is delayed and the late-marriage Navamsa reading work the timing question; love against arranged marriage compatibility and why relationships keep failing work the pattern question. Second-marriage structure is at second marriage compatibility, and the two-chart techniques are at the compatibility hub and Navamsa overlay compatibility. Every one of those pages states the same limitation: a chart describes structure and probability, never a fixed outcome, and the running dasha decides when a structural feature becomes visible at all.

Shukra remedies (a note)

Classical prescriptions for Venus difficulties include specific ritual, charity, gemstone, food and behavioural practices. Tempora treats these as ethnographic prescriptions rather than as operative causal mechanisms. The mechanics are house rulership, dignity, aspects, divisional placement, transit and mahadasha timing. Where Venus sits difficultly in a chart, the direct response is chart-specific and practical: attention to how relationships are chosen and maintained, to spending and comfort habits, to the artistic or aesthetic work the chart supports. Ritual traditions carry their own value as cultural practice, and this page describes what the tradition prescribes without selling or promising any of it.

The reproducible-astrology methodology page covers Tempora's stance on remedy-based against computation-based reading, and why Tempora will not read a chart over WhatsApp covers the practice boundary that follows from it.

The dated Shukra calendar, 2025 to 2028

Everything above is structure. This section attaches the dates. Venus is a fast body, so its full ingress table across four years runs to forty-seven entries. What follows is a readable subset: all six direction changes across 2025 to 2028, then every sign ingress for the two middle years, 2026 and 2027. The 2025 and 2028 ingresses are omitted here for length and sit in the underlying fact sheet. All dates are Swiss Ephemeris computations under the True Pushya Paksha ayanamsa.

Three things are worth reading off that table. The rhythm first: Venus takes between twenty-four and twenty-eight days per sign when direct, so a full circuit takes about a year and the ingress dates drift forward by a few weeks each cycle rather than repeating on the same calendar days. Second, the November 2026 pair of entries is the retrograde loop described above, and it is the only place in these two years where Venus enters a sign it has already left. Third, the gap between 1 September 2026 and 1 January 2027 is Venus holding Libra for four months instead of one, which the retrograde produces and which no annual almanac based on average motion would show.

The standing limitation applies to all of it. These dates are sidereal under one ayanamsa and other ayanamsas place the same ingresses a few days either side. Station dates themselves are ayanamsa-independent, since a direction change is a fact about apparent motion rather than about the reference frame, so the sign labels shift between conventions while the dates hold. And a sign-level calendar says nothing about any specific chart's natal dignity, house context or running dasha, which carry the actual reading.

Frequently asked

What does Shukra mean in Vedic astrology?

Shukra is the Sanskrit name for Venus. The word carries senses of brightness and clarity, after Venus being the brightest object in the sky after the Sun and Moon. Shukra is the karaka of marriage and the spouse (kalatra karaka), of beauty, art, music, ornament, vehicles, comfort, refinement, sweetness, diplomacy and material ease. Venus completes a zodiac circuit in about a year, spending roughly a month per sign when moving direct.

Which ascendants have Shukra as yogakaraka?

Capricorn and Aquarius risings. For Capricorn, Venus owns the 5th (Taurus, a trine) and the 10th (Libra, a career kendra). For Aquarius, Venus owns the 4th (Taurus, a home kendra) and the 9th (Libra, a fortune trine). For both, a Venus mahadasha is the strongest single planet-lord period the chart can carry. Yogakaraka status describes ownership, so the reading still depends on where Venus actually sits, its dignity and what aspects it.

Why is Venus called the significator of the spouse?

Venus is the kalatra karaka, the natural significator of the spouse and of marital life. The classical scheme reads marriage from three layers at once: the 7th house and its lord, the Navamsa (D9) division, and Venus as karaka. A reading that uses only one of the three tends to overstate itself. Classical practice for women's charts also weights Jupiter as a partner-significator alongside Venus, and that convention is stated wherever it is applied.

When is Venus retrograde between 2025 and 2028?

Three windows under Swiss Ephemeris computation. Venus turns retrograde on 2 March 2025 in Pisces and direct on 13 April 2025 in Pisces. It turns retrograde on 3 October 2026 in Libra and direct on 14 November 2026 in Virgo. It turns retrograde on 11 May 2028 in Taurus and direct on 23 June 2028 in Taurus. The roughly eighteen-month spacing is the ordinary Venus rhythm. Station dates are ayanamsa-independent; only the sidereal sign label depends on the ayanamsa in use.

How long is Shukra mahadasha?

Venus mahadasha runs 20 years, the longest planet-lord period in the Vimshottari cycle. Its own sub-period, Venus-Venus, runs about 3 years 4 months, and Venus-Rahu and Venus-Saturn are the next longest at about 3 years and 3 years 2 months. For Taurus and Libra risings it is the ascendant-lord mahadasha; for Capricorn and Aquarius risings it is the yogakaraka mahadasha. Length alone says nothing about quality, which comes from placement, dignity and house rulership.

How do Venus and Jupiter differ as benefics?

Both are classified as natural benefics, and they operate on different registers. Venus is the benefic of relation and material ease: partnership, comfort, refinement, art and the pleasant surface of a life. Jupiter is the benefic of expansion and meaning: teaching, counsel, law, children, philosophy and growth in scale. Venus tends to make a life comfortable; Jupiter tends to make it larger. The two are also classical enemies in the Parashari friendship scheme, so a Venus-Jupiter conjunction is read as two benefics on uncomfortable terms rather than as a simple doubling.

Where is Venus right now and when does it next change sign?

Under True Pushya Paksha sidereal computation Venus is at 6.6 degrees of Virgo on 6 August 2026, in Uttara Phalguni nakshatra and moving direct. Virgo is Venus's debilitation sign. Venus entered Virgo on 31 July 2026 and enters Libra, its own sign, on 1 September 2026. Other ayanamsas place the same ingress a few days earlier or later, and a sign-level position says nothing about any specific chart's house context or running dasha.
